Ferry might seek assistance from Nance

Plain Dealer Columnist

New Cavs General Manager Danny Ferry reached out to one former Cav teammate - center Zydrunas Ilgauskas - and made Ilgauskas $55 million to $60 million richer when he agreed to a new five-year contract.

Now, Ferry is reportedly reaching out to another old Cleveland teammate, as well. Word is the GM has talked with one-time star Larry Nance about possibly being the team's liaison between management and players.

In recent years, Nance - whose No. 22 was retired by the Cavs in 1995 - had largely been shut out of the organization by former GM Jim Paxson, who was fired after last season.

Nance and Ferry were Cavs teammates from 1990 to 1994.
Roger Brown Article

Sorry to post a Roger article, but I thought it was sorta worth posting.

I wanna know why Paxon shut Nance out of the organization...

roger Brown. bleh. I think it would be great to get some of our old players involved more. I liked Lary Nance, he was a great complement to Brad.

We may never know many of the reason Paxson did things but a number of the things he did attributed to his firing..

pax probably didnt want to take anyone else's advice, stubborn. maybe if he did he would not be umemployed now.

ferry is getting all the basketball junkies in the org. that he can. if you get solid people in the org. only positive things will happen. and nance is a solid human being, friend, and former player so it makes sense.

Nance wasnt shut out...he has his own racing company, his daughter is playing HS basketball as we speak, so he probably didnt have time.

He is a big family man, and I doubt he takes this job unless he will be there to see his kids play HS sports.

I don't know much about Nance as an executive but he is a good guy and one who I wouldn't mind seeing around more often.

damnit  get "HOT ROD" back in this organization NOW!!!!!... teach the big men some defensive ski!!z

I think Larry can show our lads a thing or two about defense. If you read the article it states that he becomes the go between for the players and Danny Ferry. You could almost call him a shoulder to cry on.

Feeeeelings, whoa whoa whoa feeeeelings... :chuckles:

J/k, seriously this is a good idea if Nance can establish a rapport with the players, but also *tell them when they're wrong and need to buck up* He shouldn't be around *all* the time though- what this team needs is some serious locker room leadership, not a team dad.

Last year, Jeff McInnis basically tanked the last 20 games and dropped them out of the playoffs singlehandedly. Someone should have been in that guy's grill saying Jeff, wtf?? I thought either Snow, LBJ, or Tractor would smack him back into line but they didn't. And that's a problem.

What Nance could really do to help is work mainly with the team captains, but there aren't any in place. Lebron should be one this year, Snow could be if his teammates trust his shot enough, Tractor would have been a good one but he's gone. Z isn't a vocal leader. If Larry Hughes took on that role (god, they're paying him enough) it would be *huge*.

Nance has been in the trenches, was an awesome hard-nosed PF, I'm sure he could help Lebron, Snow and Larry out.

I want LeBron to not argue calls everytime he doesnt get one, the refs hate it and refuse to call a game fair if you gripe about every single call not made. He needs to be more of a leader get on a guy call him out let them know you mean business and that this is your team.

If Saras is on board, he should be a captain. He will definitely get in your grill when it's needed. Just watch some of his games. His teammates love him b/c of his leadership on and off the court. That, and b/c he kicks ass. :)

Be a capt?? He has never accomplished anything in the NBA. Lebron wasnt even the capt as a rookie. Come on now..let's get a little serious. He has no background to get in anybodys grill.

Europe is europe, it's not the NBA, you have to earn that right, you just cant give it away because he did great in Europe..

I saw Nance at the mall when he was still playing. Kinda funny seeing a huge tall black guy in brown cords and a flannel walk past me. Looked like he shopped at TJMAXX Big & Tall.
