Luol Deng

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I brought it back to life.

And I know last season didn't end well between us and Luol's camp but maybe with all that has changed recently (New coach, new GM, #1 pick, Kyrie being locked in long-term) both sides will have a change of heart.

Would be a great fit for both sides.

Also for those of you citing his poor fit with the offense Griffin has in mind I don't think that will be a problem. Phoenix is rumored to be a team looking to be very interested in Luol come FA and they have a very up-tempo, up-and-down team. He's only been in one system his entire career (I don't think we had an offensive "system" last season) so I think it's premature to say he can't succeed playing on an up-tempo team. There is nothing to base that thinking on.

I totally agree. :chuckles:

Funny how people make fun of Dwayne Wade for his breakdown and how it cost Miami the championship, yet want to sign Deng and want to aim for the championship.

We wouldn't be bringing in Deng to be our second option on offense like Wade is in Miami. He'd probably be our fourth or fifth option, depending on how Bennett pans out this year.

People have to remember that Mike Brown made absolutely horrible use of Deng. He turned him into an isolation player, presumably because Mike Brown doesn't know any other offensive plays aside from that and the pick-and-roll. That's now who Deng is, and it made him look much worse than he should have been here. A smart coach would bring him back into his comfort zone, getting him his points on spot-up looks and cuts to the basket, which would allow him to conserve his energy for the defensive end of the floor.

Of course, if LeBron comes back, this whole discussion is moot. I agree we shouldn't give Deng max money, but signing him to a three-year deal wouldn't be terrible.

For the money, $11 million+ per season, I would still prefer to attempt to poach Parsons or Hayward.

I think this is the general view by a lot on the board, but they are not unrestricted FA's, to get them we will either have to overpay, or workout a sign and trade. The one nice part, is it seems the league is growing so any contracts you give now, should be low in the next 2-3 years if the cap goes up 3-5 million a year like it did this year.

He is still a fall back option and a better defender at the 3 than almost anyone available. We won ges beause of his d after the trade.

these are really good points. my only gripe with Deng are his ankles, the dude was hobbling all over the court when he was here, i hope those healed up. Assuming his ankle(s) is(are) better, id love it if we brought him back

Best thing for us would be melo going to Huston so they have no need for parsons

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cavaliers forward Luol Deng never forgets his roots.
A refugee whose family fled his native Sudan when he was 5 years old, Deng has donated $30,000 to Save the Children ahead of World Refugee Day on Friday -- and he's asking his friends and fans to join the effort, too.

The Luol Deng Foundation is partnering with Save the Children to provide critical child protection services for the 2.5 million South Sudanese children who are at risk of being separated from their families and recruited into armed groups.

"Today I call Chicago, Cleveland and London home, but I never forgot where I came from,'' Deng said in a press release issued by Save the Children. "I know how it feels to be far from home. I know how it feels to struggle and to be afraid for my life and my family.

"I am calling on all of you who have provided me with support and encouragement throughout my career to join forces with me now. Let's create a better tomorrow for the children of South Sudan."

Using social media channels, including Facebook, Twitter @LuolDeng9, and Instagram @LuolDeng9#, Deng, who received the J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award from the Professional Basketball Writers Association last season in honor of his community service, is encouraging family, friends and fans to join him in supporting this cause and making a donation at www.savethechildren.org/deng. In the case of Parsons, I question what Houston would match given they have high hopes of acquiring Carmelo. If they sign him to a $10 million+ deal, do they have any options after that?

If Houston picks up his team option then they have Parsons at ~$950k... But he becomes an unrestricted free agent next season. IF they decline his team option, he becomes an restricted free agent on July 1st (IIRC). There are pros and cons to both approaches.

Initially most folks thought that they would decline the option, if only to be sure to be able to match any offers. This would allow them to retain Parsons who is an up and coming SF in the league. This would probably also mean they'd be forced to overpay because teams like Cleveland would probably throw $11-12M at Parsons if they didn't have Deng or James on the squad.

I'm still reading reports that the Rockets may wish to decline his option simply to trade him. By making him an RFA, his salary can be negotiated in any trade with the Knicks making it easier to move him for Melo. It's beneficial to both teams and it avoids the necessity of giving up Lin and Asik for basically nothing. They could trade Lin and Parsons or Asik and Parsons for Melo and the salaries could be made to work on Parsons offer sheet.

The best case for Houston, however, is to find a suitable trade partner that would take Asik and Lin off their hands and give them back relatively little in return. To do this, they'd need to find a team under the cap and wanting to pay double what Asik and Lin's cap holds are, or roughly $15M. That is substantial and I don't see any team in the league wanting Jeremy Lin at $15M next year. Bundling the two makes sense as the cap hold is only $17M and Asik has tremendous value. If Houston can work out such a trade, they can then sign Melo outright and keep Parsons.

tl;dr --- Houston will try to find trade partners for Lin and Asik's horrible contracts and if they can't they'll trade Parsons and Lin for Melo.

Didn't Houston already announce that they declined his option?

Insiders: Any chance we could do a sign and trade? Or is that just not going to happen? Would love to get a different vet via sign and trade using Deng/ Is he interested in a team that is up against the cap, where we could work something out?

I had to say it LOL at this bum for not signing our offer
