Embry was not the GM for the draft as he still had a relationship with Indiana. He advised the Cavaliers to take Brad but the other decisions were made by Cavalier President Thaxter Trafton and his attorney. Embry was very surprised by the Price deal. The Harper pick was pretty obvious. Full story is in the book Forty Eight Minutes by Bob Ryan and Terry Pluto.Wayne Embry's debut as Cavalier GM in 1986.
1. Trade Roy Hinson for the 1st pick in the 1986 draft (Brad Daugherty).
2. Trade a 1989 2nd round pick for Price, who the Mavericks took in rd 2.
3. Draft Ron Harper with their own 1st rounder, number 8 pick.
Helluva start for Embry.
Helluva draft! I know he tried (Mike Sanders, Randolph Keys, Winston Bennett, Chris Mills), but Embry could never land a very good small forward. Where he finally lost me was when he took Trajan Langdon over Ron Artest, Corey Maggette, & others in the ‘99 draft. Embry refused to adapt and couldn’t bring himself to draft underclassmen.Wayne Embry's debut as Cavalier GM in 1986.

Embry hated drafting underclassman going back fifty years ago when he drafted Julius Erving after the Doc had played for Virginia. He hated the ABA for doing that but it was a mistake not to adjust.Helluva draft!
