MLB 2024 Draft

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I like Condon and Montgomery, but lets be honest, Bazzana is the supersized version of this franchises prototype prospect. He is an infielder, lefthanded, low K rate. No way they pass up.
Because of that approach, the lineup and system lacks power, lacks RH hitters, and lacks corner OFs. Maybe this is the time to help fix that with Condon.

I get that Bazzana is an extremely talented player and a baseball nerd that would fit well with our organization. I think there was a case for seeing them as 1a/1b and tiebreaking Bazzana. But with the way Condon is hitting the ball, it's hard not to think of the possibility of passing up a hitter with the potential to be the next Mike Trout. I'm not as concerned with a little swing and miss when they hit the ball the way he does for the results that he does.

Yeah I dont really disagree with you on that. Just saying what I think will happen.

Weekend Update

Charlie Condon went 7-14 against Ole Miss with 4 doubles, 2 home runs and 4 RBI. He walked once, was hit by a pitch once and scored 6 runs. He struck out 4 times.

Next up for Condon is a Tuesday night game against Clemson, followed by a weekend series at Texas A&M.

Travis Bazzana went 3-12 against Cal with 1 run scored and 4 RBI. He hit a 3-run HR in the 2nd game of the series. He walked twice and struck out once.

Next up for Bazzana is a Tuesday night game against Portland, followed by a weekend series at Oregon.

I am really going to try to make the OSU/Bazzana game against Portland tomorrow. Work may not allow it though, fingers crossed.

It really comes down to preference between Bazanna's floor or Condon's ceiling. I am usually a ceiling chaser when it comes to players. In some ways it like Arias VS Rocchio. Condon is Arias and Bazanna is Rocchio.

I like both Bazzana and Condon. But if you favor Bazzana, where do you see him playing in the field in Cleveland? Normally in a draft, the guys you pick are 3-4 years away so you really don't worry about position. But if you take a college player at 1-1, you are expecting him to be in your lineup by start of 2026 at the latest and more likely in the middle of the 2025 season. So position does matter. Is DeLauter projected as a CF? If he is, Bazzanna can't go there. Does he have the arm to be a corner OF? If not, are you moving Gimenez to SS, and moving on from Arias, Rocchio, Brito, Martinez etc. so he play 2B? You take Condon and you know you can just stick him in RF.

I really don't think Bazzana's flexibility should be the focus here. He can probably play any position as well as Condon. I just want the better player at 1-1.

Not arguing approach, but Columbus currently has two RHH outfielders(/DHs to be honest) who rank as plus power hitters. Noel was 7th in AAA HRs last year with 27 at age 21. (Note: Florial was 6th in AAA HRs.) Rodriguez hit 29 HRs between AA and AAA last year at age 23. Rodriguez is off to a good start and likely earns an opportunity at some point this year. No one hits the ball as hard as Noel, so we hope he finds the strike zone like Naylor has. Condon certainly has earned a good look, but I think he would get the same look if he were LHH.

.....by the first of May.. Joc Caglianone comparisons to Shohei are going to be all the rage.. about 90 days until the draft.. let's not dig our heels in toooooo far..

He is probably more likely to hire a translator that steals from him than hit and pitch like Ohtani.

I'm a huge Coby Mayo fan and wish we could make a deal for him. I view Condon as a possible Mayo type and that's why I like him better. You can't teach size and if the athleticism and ability to hit are present there is an advantage to that size. He has the frame to add significant good weight too. The fact that he is already displaying immense power gives me wood.

A while back.. it was suggested (by me and others) that this draft had no franchise changing players and that the general consensus was that this draft is subpar... [good college bats, not a lot of pitchers, overall]

This draft does show excellence at the top (as witness by this draftnik story in BA, firewall alert).. & then, not really a lot of game changers afterwards.. If the Guardians can leverage their Competitive Balance A pick for what the Guardians do best: evaluate other teams' farm systems and "pluck" that rare gem who becomes Corey Kluber or Joe Carter or Kenny Lofton or.. or... (this is a LONG list of spectacular trades in Cleveland's favor), then they should.. It can easily be shown that the acquired prospect's value vastly surpasses the pool money lost.. w/ the acquired prospect almost certainly being much closer to being a major league player.. So, the draft pool loss argument is weak, at best..

Having the first overall is HUGE especially this year.. After that ( picks 36, 48, 84, 114, etc) are going to be a LOT of "projection". Draft nerds should be in a haze of euphoria with this draft for this reason.. BTW.. for this draft, whoever the Guardians like & would take at 36, will probably be available at 48 and/or 84, and so on.. With a deal (a MIF/RP + Comp A).. an emerging kid like Mayo or Whisenhunt or Abel.. could be acquired instead of the 36th pick?

Thoughts?
