Mock Draft 23 Commentary!

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I don't think there's a point in this draft where I'd take Iosivas. He's definitely not in my top 20 receivers and probably isn't top 25.

I also tend to be very opinionated and make overly definitive statements, so take that for what it's worth.

I don't understand the fixation with a guy who isn't a good football player, and his appeal is being a track star... yet running 4.43

He has had solid college production and did well at the senior bowl...

I don't think he did. If you're playing against garbage, like the Ivies, I'm looking for someone who dominates. If you're not over 1000 yards, I'm not using that as a feather in your cap.

I know he got some puff pieces written about him down in Mobile. The clips I saw didn't match the words. They raved about his release, and I saw slow releases.

Part of my stance is forcing my hand. Here's the "stop drafting track guys" moment. If I'm over the top negative now and he hits, I'll backtrack hard--but if he sucks, I'm probably going to write these day three track guys off for good until one proves me wrong. We've just been burned too many times by them.

Give me a quality UDFA-projected guy like Mitchell Tinsley over him all day. He might not be a track star, but he can use his footwork to stack a DB. He can catch the ball and he can control his body to expand his catch radius. He's going to stick in the league as a 4th receiver for a while.

Part of the reason why I said, I either will hit a HR or look stupid for drafting him... we will when the draft comes around and a few years down the line...

I get it.

I just want to push back against this "speed equals high ceiling" narrative.

I also have to put the hottest of takes in writing now so in a year or three when I look back at them I can see what I was wrong on..

I hope Iosivas kills it at the next level. I'm not betting on it.

Well I bet on it! Lol

I love Jartavius Martin.

I am incredibly triggered by the way you take this slot corner and repeatedly call him not just a safety but a free safety.

Not only is covering the slot what he's done his entire college career, not only is he good in coverage there, but he fits into run fits really well. He checks all the boxes.

The only reason anyone would even call him a safety is because Illinois primarily played man cover one--because they had the best secondary in college football and could get away with it.

I can guarantee he's going to be used to cover the slot at the next level.

The last thing I wrote in that post was that Jartavius Martin can step right into Jimmy Ward's role. Ward played some games at slot corner and many games at free safety as a 49er, depending upon the scheme and health of the other defensive backs. Martin has the tools to do the same down the line.

My issue with that comp is that Ward was primarily a safety. He was always a safety and he had the flexibility to line up one on one in man coverage.

Jartavius is a corner. He lines up in man coverage. There's a chance he can learn to play safety, but he doesn't make those plays coming forward, downhill, that you need out of an NFL safety.

If we want to talk about the current crop of slot corners and who projects to playing safety, Tre Tomlinson is my number one with a bullet. He's fast, fearless, and is going to make plays for the DC who allows him to. Give him some height and he's probably a first rounder.

Sounds like you haven't followed Jimmie Ward's career as closely as you think you have.

In Ward's career, he has been moved to slot, outside corner, and free safety.

Demeco Ryans made Ward his priority free agent because of that flexibility.
