And not to make this political, because again I am a liberal progressive, but I find Barack Obama's hypocrisy astounding. While a senator, Obama voted against the amendment which authorized the President to use military force domestically - an amendment to the Insurrection Act of 1806 but hidden inside the 2006 Defense Appropriations bill. Now as President, he has not only continued Bush's encroachment, but in fact he has quietly accelerated it.

While I agree with you that there is a lot of hypocrisy there, it doesn't surprise me in the slightest. When a Republican is president, the Democrats largely vote against what he wants. When a Democrat is in office, the Republicans vote against what he wants. It matters little or less if what the president wants is something the rival party wanted four years ago when their guy was in charge. All that matters is he's a member of the rival party and they have an obligation to cock block him at every turn.

That's why nothing ever gets done in Congress. Everyone is too busy tripping each other to accomplish shit. There is no greater good in Congress. There is only the other party and the opposite of what they want.

During the Asian Pacific Economic Conference last year here in Hawaii (APEC), there were thousands of soldiers on the streets. Homeless people were rounded up and driven 20 miles away and dropped off in shelters to find their own way back to Honolulu. You couldn't walk past the intersection of Kalakaua and Ala Moana Blvd without a picture ID at a military checkpoint. There were hundreds of arrests by military police, and yes they were in conjunction with HPD, however, there are several class action lawsuits against the Governor's office as well as against President Obama for the use of military force on Oahu.

It was basically the same in Charlotte during the DNC, only we don't really have homeless people here and I don't think there were many arrests (if any). They basically turned the city into a police state for three or four days. Checkpoints everywhere. Bomb sniffing dogs and just general attack dogs everywhere. Parts of the city shutdown.

The thing was, they left when the convention ended.

That's just the reality of today. When the President and a group of "important" people all meet in one place, there's going to be a buttload of security measures in place to make sure no one tries to kill them. It was annoying that downtown Charlotte was basically shut down (to cars) for a business week, but I didn't feel like my liberties were being suppressed. Hell, I was able to wander around most of the downtown area the night Obama gave his speech at the Bobcats arena without being hassled or even questioned by any cops.
