Official Browns GM Search Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
You make it seem like Sashi Brown is all of a sudden going to coach and pick players by himself. I am telling you, the organizational layout that Haslam proposed is entirely different than what you just suggested.

Do not think of Brown as the guy picking players. He is not making scouting reports or executing trades in a locked office. From what Haslam described, Brown is going to be a cop to ensure the GM and Coach play nice together, so we do not have another Pet vs Farmer fight. If they have an argument, perhaps he breaks the gridlock, but to assume that will automatically lead to failure is foolhardy and reactionary.
Instead of hiring a glorified mediator then, why not simply hire a qualified GM who then hires his own head coach? Too logical, I suppose.

Well, it seems like Brown has plenty of experience with negotiating player contracts and managing the cap, which is part of a GM's job anyway. It sounds as if the role of the GM will be to find and identify talent.

What this all hinges on is finding a GM who can do that and Brown listening to him. If that happens, this can work. If it doesn't, it won't work.

Seems kind of unrealistic that Brown will delegate to the GM on most football matters when he has autonomy on major personnel decisions. How many superiors let their underlings dictate policy in any type of profession?

Well, good managers find employees they believe in and trust their decisions. I'd have to assume that, if the goal is to find a GM whose main job is to find talented players, Brown will listen to that guy.

It's not as if there aren't other teams that have similar set-ups. The Broncos have been brought up. Elways isn't a scout. He's an executive who listens to the people under him and makes the final decisions.

Mike Tannenbaum is a more appropriate comparison regarding Brown since despite Elway not having a scouting background, his football credentials could never be questioned. I don't understand why many of you aren't upset that Haslam isn't pursuing the qualified executive to have full autonomy of football operations that we coveted.

Probably because we all assumed that qualified executive wouldn't want to come here anyway. :chuckle:

Right, because as we were once again reminded of tonight, the team's owner is a self-sabotaging stooge. Nothing will change as long as he continues to strut the halls in Berea.

Can someone draw a model of the new power structure? I'm not even trying to be snarky, I legitimately don't know who is reporting to who.

I don't understand why it's confusing people

So if our draft picks turn out to be busts, then we blame the GM or Jazz club owner?
