COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio State was placed on three years' probation Friday, a ruling that wipes out records from four NCAA Tournament appearances by the men's basketball team -- including a trip to the 1999 Final Four.

The decision by the NCAA does not affect this season's team, which is 22-4, ranked seventh in the country and the No. 1 seed in the Big Ten tournament.

The Buckeyes won't be barred from postseason play as a result of using an ineligible player from 1999-2002 under former coach Jim O'Brien. However, the school will have to repay tournament revenues, likely around $800,000, for the four years in which Boban Savovic played. He received improper gifts, including housing and cash, from a booster.

Ohio State must take down the 1999 Final Four banner which hangs from the rafters in Value City Arena.

The NCAA came down hard on O'Brien and former assistant coach Paul Biancardi, now the head coach at Wright State. If O'Brien tries to get a job at another college, he and his new school must appear before the NCAA's infractions committee to discuss whether he will face additional limitations.

Biancardi was prohibited from recruiting until Oct. 1, 2007. If he does, Wright State could face NCAA sanctions.

Ohio State had acknowledged eight of nine violations alleged by the NCAA. The school fired O'Brien in June 2004 and held last season's team out of the postseason to try to avoid any additional penalties. The Buckeyes also limited their men's basketball scholarships to 11 this season, instead of the allowed 13.

Other penalties include a public reprimand and a reduction in on-campus visits by basketball recruits next year.

Seven violations involved the men's basketball program under O'Brien. The other two involved women's basketball and football.

Could've been a lot worse...as long as it doesn't screw up this season and next with all the good recruits we have, it isn't as bad as it could be. Sad to see that banner go...

This was about as good as it was going to get.

I listened to the press conference, and one thing that stood out to me is the reason it took so long to be resolved was b/c O'Brian kept asking for the hearings to be delayed. The university was begging the NCAA to proceed and get it over with, but O'Brian wanted it delayed so that he could finish his lawsuit against the university. He knew that the NCAA was going to drop the hammer on him, and didn't want that used as evidence against him in the civil suit, since he was claiming that he was fired for no good reason. I officially hate O'Brian.

Oh well we are so stacked for the future..Oden Lighty...damn thats gonna be nasty.

What I dont get is how Obrian is taking OSU to court for wrongful termination when he violataed all of these rules.

:)

I think it has something to do with a player that was on the team at the time we won the banner, or rather the illegal benefits that a certain player on the team at that time received.

One thing that does suck about this is it's not the basketball program that's on probation for three years, it's the whole athletic department. So say there is a major violation in recruiting a synchronized swimmer next year. B/c of that, we could end up having the hammer dropped on the whole university, banning the basketball team from post season, the football team from bowls, etc. It's a huge deal that it's not limited to the basketball program. Thanks alot, O'Brian. That guy needs shot.

Biancardi "resigned" from Wright State. Word is he and O'Brian will never coach again in college. The NCAA ruling pretty much guarenteed that, b/c any school hiring them would he forced to pay penalties for their past transgressions, and who wants to do that?

At least he got his money.
Hey, I'm not saying I feel bad for the guy. He deserves to be black listed, and didn't deserve the money. So he came out ahead in my book. OSU history should view him as a villain.

Just how awful is it being a college on probation?

Good question. According to the NCAA itself, there are now 41 universities across the nation that are on probation. Maybe the list of who isn’t on probation would be easier to print. Just in the Big Ten, four other schools are currently on probation (Illinois until October 23 for football, Michigan until November 6 for basketball, Minnesota until October 22 for basketball and Wisconsin until September 30 for basketball and football). Somehow, in the eyes of fans (let’s exclude the yellow journalists at ESPiN for this example), that certainly doesn’t diminish the feats of our Big Ten Champion football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball teams, who have had nothing to do with all these off-the-field hi-jinks.

I didn't realize so many schools were on probation. Wow!
