We're not winning the national title this year. The dream is over. Our defense is great, our special teams are great, but let's face it, the offense blows. At first I thought I was watching a team that just felt sorry for itself, and certainly there was some of that going on, but as the game wore on it became more apparant that we just weren't that good.

We won 27-6 against the Aztecs, sure, but they were giving up an average of more than 40 a game. Consider this: our three TD drives covered 1, 20, and 32 yards. That's it folks, 32 yards was our longest TD drive! Here's the problem: with out Smith in there, we really aren't a good rushing team. He's the only one who gains good yardage carrying the ball. However, Smith is just not a good passer. He's not accurate, not at all, and he has this nasty tendancy to throw the ball straight into the defender's hands about three times a game. Zwick's throws are more accurate and more likely to go into a Buckeye's hands than the opponants, but we can't seem to run the ball when we hand it to the tail back. It's either designed runs for Smith, or improvised runs by Smith. Outside of that, where is the running game?

I'm at the point were I think JT should go back into 2002 mode: run, run, pass, punt, play defense. Don't let the offense lose the game for you. That plays to our strengths: defense, special teams, field position. Even still, we're going to drop another game. At some point you need the offense to win a game for you. In 2002 we had Holy Buckeye, among other moments. Who's gonna do that on this team? I think the best we can hope for is to still win the big ten with one loss in conference and get a bcs birth. I just don't see this team running the table in the big ten.

It's a shame, cause our defense, special teams, and WRs are national championship caliber.

I agree we need some offensive firepower hopefully we get some good offensive recruits but our defense is going to be hurting after this year with hawk schlegel carpenter and countless others graduating..I'm a little worried about our future we play texas next year and usc the next to years then miami the next 2 years after that...ouch

Eh, JT has shown there will be no shortage of talent under his watch. He's a great recruiter, and unlike Cooper who also brought in top talent, JT's boys actually have half a brain and don't fail out of school. Cooper would have these awesome classes, but two years later half of them wouldn't be on the team any more. JT has awesome classes, and 4 years later damn near all of them are still there. Which is why we're deep as fuck, and looking to be so for the fore-seeable future.

I'm just a little depressed cause this was looking like a good year to make a run. However, if JT has truly returned the Buckeyes to the top echelon then a nattie can come at any time. Look at 2002. Going into 2002, all the talk was 2003 was our year, yet we brought it all together.

I think my biggest complaint is Bollman. What position has consistently been weak since 2001, when JT took over? OL. Out of the three phases of the game, offense, defense, special teams, which one has consistently been the weakest? Offense. Bollman is the OL coach and OC. It's time JT showed him the door.

I'm so glad I didn't go to SDSU... :thumbdown

you look at our offensive talent we should be explosive.i dont understand...our redzone offense is a killer.

I'm really not sure why we can't run the ball through designed plays (other than Smith and the option). Our RBs are at least average big ten backs, which makes them way better than most backs in the WAC or whatever the hell conference the Aztecs play in. I think our OL is pretty good. Against Texas they let their quick DEs get pressure a bit too much, but the Aztecs got zero pressure. If you watch them in the running game, they do pretty well. And come on, SDSU averaged 260 across the DL. My god, they started a DE who was 230!!! We have WRs that big! How do you not run it right at that guy every play?

I think it's scheme. There were a few times yesterday where the defender just beat his block to make the play, but most of the time it looked like they had the perfect defense called.

I remember two years ago after the Purdue game, one of their defenders said that 85% of the time they knew what play we were running before we snapped the ball. Talk about telegraphing your offense! Bollman must go. Sadly, I doubt it will happen. Bollman's been with JT a long time, and tressel is known for his loyalty. It sucks b/c while that line up and run right at em approach may of worked in Div I-AA, it doesn't work in Div I.

Also, how much of this is really Bollman's fault? Yes, the OL has been weak until this year, but they inherited a bare cupboard from Cooper. Now that JT has had four of his own recruiting classes, we're actually stacked with OL talent three deep, but prior to last year we were paper thin with OL depth. I think this is the first year under JT that we are NOT starting a walk on OL. Think about that. And concerning Bollman's OC duties, JT calls all the plays! For all we know Bollman is like "Coach, why don't we run this play? The one you want to run they're keying in on and isn't goint to work." To which JT replies "Suck it."

JT needs to fire Bollman, bring in a top notch OC, and let him call the plays!

There is an article where the writer watched the OSU-SDSU game, and for each play from the shotgun he was successful in predicting run or pass based on the position of the running back 41 of 44 times. If a journalist is able to do this, you know opposing DCs can. :(
