Pace of Play Watch: 2022/2023

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Cavaliers are currently 18th in the NBA in pace of play, a significant uptick from 28th to close last season.

I wondered if the pace has been measurably slower in the losing streak. To the bare eye, it felt like the Cavs pushed pace early in the game to build the lead. At the end of games, they seemed to slow down and try to outlast the opponent. Sure enough, they dropped to 22nd in the past four games:

I do not know how to isolate 4th quarter pace of play, but I do wonder if JBB's shallow rotation is causing the Cavs guards to dribble the air out of the ball late in games.

I'd like to see some changes to the back court. Both LeVert and Garland are averaging a little less than 35 minutes per game and Donovan is averaging over 39. This is just draining the heck out of their legs late in games. Couldn't be more ready for the Rubio return.

I would be interested in Garland on/off pace. He fricking loves walking the ball up instead of hitting it ahead. It's crucial he learns to pass it up to Mitchell to attack

I am right with you. When LeVert and Donovan started and played the majority of minutes in the backcourt, pace of play measured higher than I remember in recent Cavs history. Garland's talent puts him on the floor, but I wonder if he has the stamina to play over 32 minutes a game and remain the engine to the offense. Slower pace in the fourth quarter puts the game in the hands of the officials, not our players. I want to see Rubio come back and push pace as the Kevin Love of the guards.

Update time for Early March. The Cavaliers are indeed dead last in pace of play in the NBA with the Golden State Warriors, LA Lakers, and Memphis Grizzlies at the top.

The Grizzlies overcame the Cavs for the best defense in the NBA. The Kings lead in offense and are currently in 9th for pace of play under slowpoke aficionado Mike Brown:

In my opinion, the Cavs should slow the game down to protect the half court defense at times. They absolutely ruin opportunities to build a lead in transition at other times. Cavalanches are way down this season without the happy-go-lucky Cedi and Love efficiently pushing off the bench.

I still put a great deal of this blame on Garland who passes on opportunities to push. When LeVert and Donovan started in the back court, the Cavs were much closer to the middle of the pack.

Speaking of the Kings:

Sacramento plays at one of the NBA’s fastest cadences, and scores at the highest clip in basketball after forcing a live-ball turnover: 1.44 points per possession, according to advanced data site Inpredictable. But zooming out from how fast the Kings play on offense, they’re also incredibly efficient. How efficient? They own the highest offensive rating in league history, scoring 118.6 points for every 100 times they have the ball.

The Kings offense is insane. I would love to steal a few of their sets. I think we lack the personnel to do everything they do (consider Monk and Huerter as your wings compared to Okoro and Caris on offense), but we have smart passing bigs and some electric guards ourselves. Really recommend catching a Kings game if you get a chance. One of the best non-Cavs teams this year!

Hard to blame Garland when JBB has been quoted saying the slower the better.

JBB would never allow us to play like the Kings. Do we have the personnel to play up-tempo? Absolutely. Are we going to? No chance. We are gonna grind like it’s 1999

The question is….can you play a frenetic brand of basketball at both ends of the court? Or does there necessarily have to be ‘downtime’ to conserve energy? JBB’s focus is obviously defense, which means he’s not going to conserve on that end…..so it has to be done in a slower approach to the offense.

If I have to choose between an offensive buzzsaw or a grinding defense then I choose the defense every time. It will be interesting to see how the kangs offense fairs in the playoffs.

The Cavs are 27th in field goal attempts per game and 10th in effective shooting percentage and offensive efficiency. They tend to use most of the shot clock before taking a shot, but they are above average in points per possession.

Since both teams get the same number of possessions regardless of the pace, I don't think the Cavs' slow pace is a problem.

However, I would like to see them push the ball up the floor more aggressively after a steal or defensive rebound in order to try and get a high percentage shot before the defense can set up.

I swear to Ahura if basketball does something as stupid as the moronic pitch clock in baseball, I am so done.
