Paxson Clarifies Draft Picks

Reader Tom Vanaday (Akron) and others wondered how the Cavs' draft picks stand up for the near future. I forwarded the e-mail to GM Jim Paxson, who responded:

"I'll try to help...

"2005: No first-round pick. (Second-round pick is conditional.)

"2006: We have our first-round pick. If we make the 2005 playoffs, we won't have our 2006 second-round pick. If we miss the playoffs, we have the first- and second-round picks.

"2007: Our first-rounder is protected if it's in the top 10 through the year 2011. We have no second-rounder.

"2008: If our first pick in 2007 went to Boston (for Jiri Welsch), then we have no second-round pick.''

To clarify our 2nd round pick for this season. If we make the playoffs, we receive a 2nd round pick. If we fail to make the playoffs, we do not get the pick.

So missing the playoffs is a double blow.

Yea, but on the bright side (if there is one), we get both picks in 2006 if we miss the playoffs this year. So basically, it moves our second rounder back one year...

Trading our First Rd 2007 Draft pick for Welsh was one of the most stupidest moves that Paxson resently made before he was fired. So if we make the playoffs in 2007, we don't get 2nd round pick in 2008?
