It's that time of year when woodstoves, space heaters and more get fired up. Fires spread quickly and can be devastatingly tragic. Please take a few moments to check your smoke detectors and replace any batteries/non-functioning units.

Ok I’m about to right now

you should also get a CO2 detector for each floor of the house, plug into the walls, but every year about 500 people die from accidental CO2 poisoning and its the stoves and heaters that have the potential to leak the CO2 and its an odorless gas (insert odorless joke here, lol)

CO ;)

Jokes aside, you’re absolutely right. I actually just got brand new ones for each floor of our house a couple days ago. If you can only get one, place it somewhere near your bedrooms. Plug-in ones are great if you’re like me and are worthless when it comes to electrical work - even better if you can spring a little extra and get the ones that have a display that shows detected CO levels.

Following along on this, be sure to get your furnace serviced every year - furnaces with unseen faults (such as cracks in the heat exchanger) and/or years of wear and tear can also be dangerous sources of carbon monoxide leaks.

My Uncle came to visit my cousins first house with friends. He saw there were no smoke detectors. He bought some and put them in, and I shit you not, that house burned down that night and everyone got out safely even though they were all asleep.

Something so simple... I guess that makes it easy to overlook... The reason I created this post is below. Erik was a great guy and a very close friend to many of my friends.. A lot of people are hurting right now. If you can donate something, thank you. If not, please just take the time to check your detectors, extinguishers, etc. Maybe throw in some random I love you hugs while you are at it. Take care everyone :)

Wouldnt it be ironic if it was faulty wiring from the new smoke detectors that caused the fire.

Hi. Bumping this thread.

In 2003, I lost my GF of nearly 2 years (I would have likely married her) to an arson house fire just outside of the OSU campus.

Since then, her father (who is still my close friend) has advocated and even testified before congress about the TYPE of smoke detectors that are required in residences.

I’d like to implore all of you to have at least 1 photoelectric (or combo) smoke alarm on every floor of your homes. Traditional (ionization) alarms are great at detecting flames, but photoelectric detectors are superior at detecting smoke and smoldering fires… the most deadly kind.

These alarms would have likely saved my GF and her friends that night. Pls keep your families safe!

Such a tragic loss. Something one never gets over.

Wow. I never knew this story (not from Ohio) and I am so sorry.

Yesterday Dec. 20th was the memorial for my friend, his wife and daughter who died in a housefire in early November... It is painful to say, but the reality is this was likely preventable with proper working smoke detectors. Fires can spread extremely fast and by the time you realize it, you're succumbing to the smoke.

Something so simple...Can be the difference between life and death... I love you Erik and will miss you terribly, thank you for all the great times and memories.. Your kids are wonderful, and it was great to see and hear how much you meant to so many people... RIP you glorious dork.
