Shaky Start for the Wine and Gold
The Cavaliers still have 22 days until their home opener against Dallas on Halloween. They might need all 22.
Daniel Gibson tallied 13 points, but it wasn’t enough to bail out a listless Wine and Gold squad as Washington jumped out to a big lead and never looked back – dropping the Cavaliers 81-62 in Cleveland’s preseason opener.
In all fairness, Mike Brown used his starters sparingly – with LeBron James, Zydrunas Ilgauskas and Drew Gooden playing only 21 minutes apiece. The starting frontcourt didn’t exactly light it up in their abbreviated appearances – hitting on a combined 4-for-21 from the floor – but that’s what exhibition season is all about.
"It’s the first preseason game going against another opponent so you know, definitely that’s not what we’re going to look like when we get close to regular season form," said LeBron. "But you get some jitters out of the way, and then proceed to get better."
The Cavaliers took the floor at The Q for the first time since being swept by the San Antonio Spurs in last year’s NBA Finals and looked out of sync from the opening tip. Only Gibson and Damon Jones seemed to find any rhythm throughout the course of the one-sided affair.
The Wizards didn’t exactly light it up, but they didn’t have to – holding the Cavaliers to a combined 30 percent from the floor. Antonio Daniels led Washington with 12 points and Oleksiy Pecherov netted 10 off the bench. Gilbert Arenas was 2-for-11 from the floor – including a 30-footer to end the first half – and finished with nine points to lead Washington’s starters.
Gibson was the only Cavalier to net double-figures, going 5-for-9 from the floor with four boards, an assist and a blocked shot. The sophomore from Texas was 2-for-3 from long distance in 24 minutes of action.
"Hopefully, over time of being on the practice floor and being on the game floor and watching tape, we’ll be on the right way," said Coach Brown. "There were times tonight when the game looked easy, but we have a ways to go on both ends of the floor."
Both clubs struggled in the first quarter, with Washington leading by a point, 16-15, after one. But the Wizards were scorching in the second quarter, led by reserve Antonio Daniels, and notched 29 points in the period. The Cavaliers responded with 14 in the second stanza and didn’t top the 20-point plateau all night.
The Cavaliers had a decent night rebounding the ball, with Ilgauskas, Gooden, Dwayne Jones and Donyell Marshall tallying seven boards apiece.
Gibson’s NBA Draft classmate, Shannon Brown, did nothing to hurt his chance for more minutes in Mike Brown’s rotation. In 22 minutes, the former Spartan notched nine points on 2-for-4 shooting – going 4-for-4 from the stripe. He had moments of difficulty on the defensive end, but turned a nice effort, overall.
The only other Cavalier to make any sort of impact was Damon Jones, who went 3-for-4 from beyond the arc for nine points to go with a pair of assists. Jones, Brown and Gibson were the only Cavaliers to hit three-pointers.
More than anything, the Cavaliers came out of Tuesday night’s affair physically unscathed and will play a back-to-back on Thursday and Friday before departing for their eight-day journey to China.
