Rajon HOT WATER Rondo

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Rondo looked, dare I say, "quick" last night. At what, 36 years old? Not bad.
Love to see old guys make hustle plays too. Really sets the tone. He was huge last night in 33 min. If DG is out again tonight I don’t think it’s reasonable to ask Rondo to have to do that again on a back-to-back. Would have to see some Goodwin.

Rondo also brought up in the post game interview that he had COVID when he was traded and was pretty sick. He was bedridden for 10 days which would explain how slow and out of it he looked when he started with this team.

He’s always been Indiana’s Mr. Basketball !

I bet this is his last year, I could be wrong, but I bet he would be perfect for a coaching job if he decides to hang the hightops up.

Based on his comments in this morning's Cleveland.com article, he loves our situation and in particular Bickerstaff, calling him one of his favorite coaches he's ever played for. If he doesn't return as a player I'd love for him to join Bickerstaff's crew.

So odd how things happen. A little over a decade ago this guy was one of Cleveland's biggest villains, while now he's something of a horse whispering savior.

This. So we get hot takes about how washed Rondo looked (and I admit saying he was cooked in one of my posts). But none of us really knows what factors are affecting players at any given time, especially when they change teams and have major upheavals. Rondo is starting to look fairly healthy for the first time since he got here. We just couldn't see it because we were assuming his diminished/impaired performances were all he could ever provide going forward. I hope we go real easy on his minutes when DG gets back, and conserve him for the playoffs. He might turn out to be a valuable contributor in key moments, and I never would have thought that before the last 2 games.

“I was thinking about retiring,” Rondo deadpanned, before later clarifying he was joking and still loves the game. “It’s very refreshing being around a group of men, young guys like this that’s willing to sacrifice every night and playing for one of my favorite coaches I’ve ever played for -- a point guard’s or superstar’s dream coach."

---

"With Rubio away from the team, Rondo has become All-Star point guard Darius Garland’s mentor. Shortly after Rondo’s arrival, the Cavs were on the team bus from San Francisco to Sacramento. Garland was on the phone with his dad. In the distance, he heard Rondo screaming his name, so Garland hung up and walked to the back. The two re-watched the whole game together -- the first time any teammate had done that with Garland.

Since then, Garland typically ventures over to Rondo during timeouts, free throws or brief in-game stoppages. They talk through sets, offensive and defensive strategies, how to best run the pick-and-roll and how to counter various coverages. In a way, beyond being a short-term stopgap, Rondo was an investment in the future. The Cavs knew, even with his skills diminished, there was immeasurable value in what Garland could soak up.

The same goes for the other youngsters. Rondo has gotten close with rookie Evan Mobley despite a considerable age gap. The veteran recently pulled Jarrett Allen -- and other bigs -- over to an empty basket at practice, wanting to demonstrate pick-and-roll attacks and lobs that worked for some of Rondo’s former teams."

“Down the stretch he kept us calm. He put the ball where it needed to go. And really orchestrated us offensively and defensively. When he has the ball in his hands, everybody kind of just feels at home.”

It technically wasn't the playoffs so could not get playoff rondo. Shouldn't have played tonight if that's the case.

He was as bad as I thought he'd be.

Had a good attitude though. So that was a positive.

But he was cooked and we probably needed to swing a trade at the deadline for someone else to be the backup.

Might be a spicy call, but I think we should bring him back next year. And get him a clipboard. Rondo has an amazing basketball mind. Would be an absolute shame to waste that just because his body is no longer able to keep up.

Seemed like he really took to that coaching on the floor role. We didn’t hear or see any of that team cancer talk that so many said he would be.

As bad as he was tonight, if he wants another season, we could do worse than Rondo as our 15th man depending on how our backup PG situation plays out.

Rondo should only be back as a coach not a player imo, well an truly cooked on the court

I am in agreement with this. If Rondo would agree for this upcoming season.

Need to find someone who can play that role in his stead... because Rubio is a big question mark and probably wouldn't even see a court well into 2023. I don't know who's out there that can do something similar.
