Sounds like the Piston are in the works for picking up Ben Gordon, so they might be looking to trade Rip. He's still got 4 years left, but would be a great second/third scoring option. A trade of Rip and Jason Maxiell for Ben Wallace would work according to to RealGM. Gives us a young athletic big and another scoring option. Also allows Big Ben to retire a Piston.

I've always been a fan of Rips. He works tirelessly on the offensive end, running all around the court and once he gets half a look at a midrange jumper, it's usually money. He would do wonders for our ball movement on offense and would free up our offensive playbook with his activity. I would love to have him as our starting 2-guard.

With that said, I just don't see Detroit dealing him to us unless we overpay.

Bingo. Rips movement off of the ball would would do wonders for our offense and he's not a horrible defender either. I would love to try and pick him up, but I just can't see Dumars trading him to a division rival.

Ben left Detroit because they weren't willing to pay him what he wanted. Why would they suddenly change their mind for a (basically) useless Ben Wallace and his $14M cap #? They're trying to rebuild on the fly and trading Rip (their best scorer) and Maxiell (their only real rebounder) for a guy that has no gas left in the tank just doesn't make sense. There would have to be a third team involved that is willing to move an all-star for cap space, young talent, and a shot at joining in the 2010 fun...maybe Phoenix? We'd send them Ben and JJ, they send Detroit Amare, Detroit sends them Amir Johnson and their #1. I think Rip would fit in great here, and Maxiell is a capable backup (like all of our other bigs), but they don't solve our real problems. I'll pass.

i agree, but im not too sure of rips value, what we'd have to 'overpay' to get him..

We'll take Kwame and Rip, they can have ben, darnell, and a pick.. :p

While Ben Wallace wouldn't have value to them as a player, if he accepted a buyout and retired this year, he would save cap. That and he would be off their 2010 books regardless. They're very interested in clearing more cap for that free agency class and Rip is one of only two players (Prince) that are set to make over $5 million that year.

They would obviously want picks and young talent in return (this is where a third team would probably play a role), but you would have to think moving Rip would be done for financial reasons just as much as gaining new talent.

I understand the thought process behind the idea, I just don't buy it. Dumars hasn't given any indication that he's willing to punt another season for hopes of getting into 2010. The AI/Billups deal was made to get them under the cap for 2009 so they wouldn't have much competition for the free agents on the market. They save money with a buyout, but they don't have any guarantee Ben would accept said buyout. Even if he did, by the time they negotiated the trade and negotiated the buyout with Ben, most of the marquee free agents will be signed, as they tend to go quickly and set the market value for the rest of the players. I'm not sure I'd be willing to trade Ben and a pick for Rip Hamilton anyways. Rip doesn't solve a real need of ours - he's not a good defender and he's not a post player. I'm not crazy about trading for Shaq, but he at least solves some problems we have on this team...

:p

and they send us a pick

Allows them to sign Ben Gordon & Boozer, plus someone like Gortat with the MLE (They'll get that as long as theyre not under the cap by the first day of the season, so theoretically they could get 2 FA's then use MLE)

Stuckey / Bynum
Gordon / Afflalo
Prince / ?
Boozer / Hickson / Sharpe
?? Gortat ?? / Maxiell?

Cavs:
Mo / Delonte
Rip / Boobie
LeBron / Kinsey
Andy / Amir /Darnell
Z / Kwame

plus 3 draft picks (C, PG, SF).. 2 in the first round

Yes i know not realistic and doesnt help most of our problems...
