McAllister to become NFL's second-highest paid RB
ESPN.com news services

NEW ORLEANS -- Deuce McAllister agreed to an multiyear contract extension with the New Orleans Saints on Thursday, avoiding a feared holdout for the centerpiece of the team's offense.

ESPN.com's John Clayton reports that McAllister's new deal is eight years, $50.1 million, including $12.5 million in signing and option bonuses. The contract includes $3.1 million in escalators that McAllister can achieve in the third year based on performance to push the total to $53.2 million.

The deal was announced a half-hour before the Saints' first mandatory meeting of training camp. Saints officials did not say how much McAllister would be paid, but McAllister had said earlier that he expected it to be the second-largest contract awarded to an NFL running back, also making him the highest paid player in franchise history.

San Diego's LaDainian Tomlinson, who has an eight-year, $60 million contract, is the league's highest paid running back.

Entering his fifth season, McAllister has run for 4,194 yards. Most of that came during the past three seasons. He had only 91 yards rushing his rookie season, when he backed up Ricky Williams. Williams was traded to Miami after that season, and McAllister has not run for fewer than 1,000 yards since.

His best season was 2003, when he ran for 1,641 yards.

With a revamped offensive line, New Orleans has sought to simplify its play book and rely more heavily on the run -- a plan tailored for 6-foot-1, 232-pound McAllister.

i need an update on eddie george--- (gotta know about the buckeyes)

make it happen captain....

He is out of Dallas since the emergence of Jones and such, don't be surprised to see him playing for the Jets Bears or even the Texans who could use a power rusher to compliment Domanic Davis.

thank you kind sir. :gap:

Im surprised he got this kind of deal when Shuan Alexander and Edge James cant even get a deal, as free agents.

Shocking..

Probably because Deuce is a more loyal guy, he has never been benched or anything to my knowledge and he obviously cares more about his team his friends and such to stay with New Orleans they aren't exactly the Saints. I could see why Duece could complain I mean they aren't a good team but why Alexander and especially James does is beyond me. They are on top teams and both of them are a few players away from a superbowl. James is playing with the best QB in the league in Manning and Alexander is running behind the best lineman in Walter Jones. Bottom line Edge and Alexander are a bit greedy and it's understandable. btw Alexander agreed to terms and Edge ended his holdout.

Alexander is greedy?! They didnt even offer him a decent long term deal.

You have to understand, contracts in the NFL are not guaranteed, so they could care less how much they are getting paid per year. They want a good signing bonus, and as a RB, a work horse, esp Alexander, he deserved it.

He never made a scene except getting upset about the last game of the year, but the NFL is a business no matter how you slice it and the Seahawks just lost one of the best RBs in the league because they wouldnt pony up.
