Is Byron Scott a good in-game coach, or does he just sit there with a blank expression staring at the court? Genuinely curious as to how much of a change we're getting.

This is from rotoworld couple mins ago
Byron Scott's agent, Brian McInerney, said Thursday that Scott has agreed to "essential terms (of a contract), with details to be worked out throughout the night" to coach the Cavaliers next season.

Scott/Budenholzer, here we come.

I believe Scott will be good here, he will be more respected by our players than MB. That helps.

Shaw wants that job badly... yeah sure, it's b/c of your daughters final yr... as if giving him longer to decide would change that fact.

sounds like a good way of saving face. i think its more likely they used shaw to get leverage on scot

Scott will run triangle too? If so, the only downside to him is D mentality? I'd take him... that's why you have assistants, to cover your deficiencies!

Amick:

More from McInerney: “The presentation was very aggressive and didn’t require hours of negotiation.”

McInerney: What about Lebron?
Grant: He'll re-sign
McInerney: Deal :chuckles:

Byron Scott to coach Cavaliers (maybe someone already beat it to me)
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=5344512

Byron Scott will be named the Cleveland Cavaliers coach on Thursday, according to a source close to the situation.

The Cavaliers and Scott are finalizing the details of a contract that could possibly make him the next coach of LeBron James.

Cleveland settled on Scott after strongly considering Los Angeles Lakers assistant coach Brian Shaw, who impressed the Cavaliers during interviews earlier this week.

This would be the third head coaching job for the 49-year-old Scott, who led the New Jersey Nets to consecutive NBA Finals appearances in 2002 and 2003.

Scott, who coached the Nets from 2001-2004, won the league's Coach of the Year Award in 2008 after leading the New Orleans Hornets to a surprising 56-win season. He coached the Hornets from 2004-2010 and has a 352-355 career record.

Of course, Scott does not know what kind of team he could be leading. If James re-signs with the Cavaliers, he could have an Eastern Conference contender on his hands. If James goes elsewhere, Cleveland will be in a rebuilding effort similar to the ones he took over in New Jersey and New Orleans.

It is the experiences Scott had in rebuilding those franchises that led him to maintain interest in the Cavaliers' job without assurances that James would return to the club.

In terms of re-signing James, the hiring of Scott would work in Cleveland's favor. James reportedly wants to play for a former player, and Scott was that and then some.

Scott played 14 years in the NBA, winning three championships in his 11 seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers. Scott teamed with some of the greatest players of all-time, including Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and, in his final season, Kobe Bryant.

Scott has maintained a great relationship with Bryant, which is emblematic of another reason he won over the Cavs: his ability to build strong relationships with superstars. In New Jersey, Scott had a good relationship with Jason Kidd, though Kidd soured on Scott's coaching toward the end of his tenure with the team. And in New Orleans, Scott was close with Chris Paul, one of James' best friends.

Once the deal is finalized, it will close a dramatic search to replace Mike Brown, who was fired in May after five seasons in Cleveland.

The Cavaliers initially offered the job to Michigan State coach Tom Izzo. Cleveland owner Dan Gilbert was willing to pay Izzo nearly $6 million a year, but after a long and ballyhooed period of consideration, the NCAA coaching legend decided against accepting the job without knowing whether James would return.

Scott and Shaw were both neck-and-neck for the job Tuesday night, and several reports had Shaw as the frontrunner. Shaw's agent, Jerome Stanley, told The Associated Press via email late Tuesday night that his client was Cleveland's favored choice, and there were reports that Shaw was assembling a staff to help him in his first head coaching gig.

Scott's agent, Brian McInerney, even sent out an e-mail congratulating Shaw on getting Cleveland's job.

"Coach Scott welcomes Coach Shaw into the ranks of head coaching, and as a Laker family brother, wishes him the best, until the final two minutes of any game where they are competing against each other," the e-mail read.

The Cavs, however, never offered Shaw the position. Instead, Cavaliers sources said they decided on Scott late Tuesday night and began negotiating with him Wednesday morning. Stanley then called the club Wednesday afternoon, telling them his client was pulling himself out of the running.

According to Stanley, Shaw notified Cleveland brass on Wednesday afternoon that he was withdrawing his name from consideration, citing "timing issues."

Shaw's withdrawal opens the door to speculation that he may want to remain available should Lakers head coach Phil Jackson retire. Jackson informed Lakers spokesman John Black via e-mail late Tuesday night that he intended to stick to his plan to inform the team of his decision to return to the team by Friday.

LeBron James has open mind, Byron Scott on verge of finalizing contract and other Cavaliers targets: Free Agency Upate

On the first day of free agency only one thing was clear, LeBron James is now officially a free agent.

As was expected, James passed on his $17.1 million playeroption and became an unrestricted free agent at midnight on Thursday.

According to multiple sources, James entered free agency with an open mind and had made no final decisions on his future. It was exactly the way he said he'd enter the process 18 months ago and he's stuck to his plan. That process includes holding a series of meetings with suitors.

Those will start Thursday when the New Jersey Nets and New York Knicks are expected to meet with James. The meetings are expected to last three days and include the Miami Heat, Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Clippers. The Cavs are expected to be one of the last team to meet with James.

Scott update

After negotiating into the early morning hours, the Cavs made great progress in talks with Byron Scott on a contract to become the team's next head coach, sources said. All signs point to the Cavs finalizing the deal on Thursday.

The Cavs re-opened talks with Scott after a series of meetings Wednesday morning. After meeting with the team on Monday and Tuesday, Lakers assistant Brian Shaw the team did not formally offer him the job.

Cavs make free agent calls

While James is clearly their No. 1 priority, the Cavs have other missions in the free agency period that began on Thursday.

The team is expected to contact high-profile free agents Amare' Stoudemire, who they attempted to trade for in February, and Chris Bosh. Both options would require sign-and-trades and neither is likely unless James elects to re-sign with the team first.

According to sources, one of the team's other interests is Dallas Mavericks' center Brendan Haywood. The Cavs actually drafted Haywood in the first round nine years ago before trading him on draft night. With Shaquille O'Neal and Zydrunas Ilgausaks becoming free agents, the Cavs are looking at big men options.

Haywood averaged 9.1 points and 9.3 rebounds with the Wizards and Mavericks last season. A source said the Cavs may be interested in doing a double sign-and-trade by swapping Haywood for O'Neal. However, such a deal would be complex and hard to execute.

The Cavs are also believed to pursue in various shooting guards. Sources indicated the team planned to make contact with Ray Allen, Mike Miller and John Salmons. Allen, like Stoudemire and Bosh, would become more likely if James re-signs.

Miller has been a target of the team for the last several years and has a strong relationship with James. He's expected to draw a lot of interest from other teams as well. Salmons opted out of his contract with the Milwaukee Bucks but several reports have indicated he may re-sign with that team.

One other player the Cavs are expected to show interest in is Knicks free agent forward Al Harrington.

The Cavs currently don't have any salary-cap space but have their $5.5 million mid-level exception and a $1.9 million biannual exception they can use on free agents. However, it is most likely they'll wait on a decision from James before getting serious with any candidate.

Do you guys think Byron Scott would be a better coach than Brian Shaw?

I bet you Lebron thinks he will be and that's what is important here.

Scott brings experience that Shaw does not have.

Yes.

Further; I don't buy the idea that Shaw wanted to wait for LeBron. It may have played a small part, but the real reason is that he wanted to wait on Jackson who should be making his decision on Friday or Saturday. That was too late to wait for the Cavs. Also; I believe Scott was the guy all along and the first option for LeBron as well.
