So Long, James Jones

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
James Jones actually contributed last year and showed the ability in the last 30 games + the playoffs to come in at any point cold in the game and hit threes. He will not help you take over a game because of what he gives back on defense, but he will help you hold serve while out on the court. That is acceptable for a guys slotted 11th or 12th on the roster.

He is not dead weight on a 15 man roster. Not in the bottom 5 roster slots. Not for the vet min.

As far as locker room presence, listen to the way Love, LeBron, and Blatt all talk about him. He is a natural communication bridge between all three of them, should things ever get hairy again communication wise. But even without that, I am fine with him in the roster.

He's not dead weight by any means, I'm glad he's back, but I do kind of see him in our bottom 5 roster spots at the moment. He's probably our 12th best guy (when everyone is fully healthy). Which honestly, that speaks volumes of our depth, despite what some say around here about us not being that deep or improving that enough this offseason. Here's the way I see it...

1. LeBron (duh)
2a. Kyrie
2b. Love
4. Shumpert
5. Mozgov
6. Tristan*
7. J.R.*
8. Mo
9. Delly*
10. AV
11. Richard Jefferson
12. JJ
13. Miller
14. Kaun*
15. Harris

* assuming they're resigned/signed

The 4-7 spots can be debated any way you want. Truthfully, those spots could change any given night. I just did my ranking based on guys who had more complete games, youth, reliability, long term importance to the team, etc. So, don't kill me on those if you don't agree with the exact order. The 8-10 spots can be debated as well. Then RJ, JJ, Miller get the nod over the two unproven guys just by default. Kaun isn't signed yet, but hopefully he will be, and I see potential for him to jump up over some of the old heads. Joe Harris at this point is a guy I see as being that moveable part should a better role player become available with the Haywood contract/TPE, or traded/cut should they want to go the 10 day contract route with other players.

Looks about right to me except I'd have Kaun(if signed) slotted above Miller

Any positive on court contribution we get from Miller would be a welcome shot to all.

I'd also put RJ ahead of Andy simply due to the history of Andys injuries and the nature of recoveries from Achilles tears.

Depending on how well Mo and RJ play, I think Jefferson may also slot above Delly.

But those are small things in the scope of things overall.

Even though I liked JJ this past year I am wondering if we may not be better off with a younger player with better defense to back up LBJ. Maybe someone like Dorell Wright. Wish we could get rid of Miller and JJ could just take his roster spot.

Ask, and ye shall receive...

I fully expect Jefferson to take most or all of JJs minutes. We aren't going to need deadeye shooting much next year because I have a feeling we are going to be winning most games.

When there's an ability to hide Jones defensively, he's a great floor spacer still. He gave us some big minutes last year. That's the allure of James Jones. When we really need someone to come through, even if he hasn't done anything in 2 months, you can still be comfortable dusting him off and getting him a couple of open threes. He'll probably give you something at the right time.

James Jones will be a threat from three even in his sleep, TBH.

I have a real soft spot for this guy. He is atrocious defensively because he can't keep up with wings, and cant defend the post either, but I just love him offensively. Blatt does a really job of finding lineups that compliment his defensive deficiencies and also exploiting the other teams lineup by hiding him.

He has my favorite shot on the team. He starts off really square to the basket, or somewhere between 11:00 and 12:00 with his feet, but cranks out a great turning motion in air with that fluid one motion release that gets a ton of air under the ball and aligns his elbow to the basket. Those two things give him a ton of power and keeps him aligned. You don't see many guys his size and length with one motion shots, but I think a lot of it has to do with his lack of strength. That mid air turn and quick one motion release allows him unlimited range.

Such a pro's pro, the guy can come in at any time without any type of established rhythm and just bury shots.

I think some people tend to forget that we have the 3pt contest champions of 3 consecutive years...Jones, Love, and Kyrie (has JR ever participated???) I just find that extremely cool, and in Jones' case he beat two of the greatest trey shooters of all time, Allen and Pierce.

James Jones as the 7th or 8th guy in your rotation is a recipe for failure.

James Jones as the 12th or 13th guy on your depth chart, however, is an amazing luxury.

I love his demeanor, helps the younger players, a pro's pro. Always ready to drain 3's when called upon, and while he is not good at defense, he tries his hardest which is better than not trying.

And on that note....

Cavaliers respond to Jones in second half against Sixers

(The Sports Xchange) - Veteran forward James Jones launched a blistering tirade at his Cleveland team mates, including LeBron James, at halftime of Friday's clash against the winless Philadelphia 76ers, which helped spark them to a 108-102 victory.

The Cavs were struggling to maintain focus for the third consecutive game and Jones, who has been alongside James for five consecutive NBA Finals appearances, had seen enough.
If the Cavaliers want to be great, he said, they have to do things a different way.
"That hit home for us," Cleveland forward Kevin Love said.

"Not much needed to be said (after that). We just went out there in the third quarter and had a lot better effort."

James scored 18 points in the third quarter on his way to 31 points and 13 assists for Cleveland.
"J.J. got on all of us and we responded," James said.

"I respect J.J. probably more than anybody in this area because of my relationship with him and how long we've been together. It's my job to respond."

JJ has been using the shot fake a lot more this season. While good in principle it appears as soon as he dribbles the ball he cant hit a shot though. Hopefully it rounds out and they start to drop

Windhorst has said this before. If he is not straight up and down he won't hit.
