espn had boston/cleveland summer league game on. boston had alot of players that had been drafted last year, the year before and this year and cleveland had luke, martynas and a bunch of free agents. we ended up winning, leading from the start and good fourth quarter. luke looked alright. his shot is still a little off and looks a tad slow but had some nice dishes and kept grabbing boards. on offense he was looked to as the main man and some trouble in that role but his drives did lead to some nice passes.

the reason for the post is martynas an**** whatever his last name is. he is much more atheletic than i thought i would see. for being 7'2" and growing he moved around the floor well. moved his feet on d and blocked numerous shots. he is a ballplayer not just a tall lithy. battled in the middle well. he was muscled around a little but his size was too much for the celts sometimes. nice pickup by ferry. definately needs to muscle up but knows how to play and nice bb iq. he went down with a back injury late but i think he had problems earlier in summer league play. he did get plenty of court time.

varem (i think that's his name) also looked good. he's from wash. st. university. he showed that he has game. he is quick for his size and could be a surprise.

gilchrest got outplayed by bynam and did not look very good. lucas would be a better option as a third point imo.

Yeah , marty is a tremendus player ,in 2-3 years hes capable of starting.

just needs some more muscle , and fat

Like I said, this is a completely different situation then Diop.

Diop was a legit NBA body. He was 7-0, 280 lbs coming into the NBA.

The problem?

Diop had absolutely no basketball skills whatsoever.

Martynas on the other hand, spent a lot of his young life in Europe training with Arvydas Sabonis and its shows. Martynas actually has very good athleticism, soft touch, court vision, quickness and ball handling for someone standing at 7-3.

His problem is that he's just a toothpick. He only weighs about 235-240 pounds. He really needs to put on a good 20 pounds of pure muscle to simply be able to take the beating that every NBA big man takes every night.

I wonder if marty may be better at power forward in the league then center. Sure he's 7'1, and some change with out shoes, 7'3ish with shoes. That height makes you think of him as a center. But, he makes me think power forward with his game,a dn size.

He's quick for a big man. He has the foot speed to guard powerforward, he just needs a year or two everyday in the weight room.

Hopefully Kellers can get him and Varejao more beefed up I'm wondering how much muscle anderson has put on since seasons end, they were trying to bulk him up more.

I'm pretty sure Marty A was officially weighed at the pre draft camp at about 228 lbs. He's even lighter than many reports have him to be.

The skills do appear to be there but his low post game supposedly needs work. Right now he's more of a F than he is a true C. This part of his game should improve with more weight and strength.

james was at the game also, checking it out. plus he went against nba backups in k. perkins, the high schooler jefferson. so against some nice competition he showed he could be a factor.

Even if Marty somehow made the team, wouldn't he be so low priority and see so little playing time (racking up DNP CD's), that the few times he would see action, he wouldn't be on the court long enough to get beat up?

You would not play Marty this season. His body is just not ready and he would get beat up each time on court which would severly dent his confidense. Another year overseas or in the NBDL is definately the best case scenario.

I say keep him in the nbdl so we can still track his progress easier and more people will see him as opposed to in euro leagues.

I think you keep him on the 15 man roster and let Z beat on him during practice. Fastest way to learn the position.

How does being in the NBDL affect his contract?

I would guess that we'll want to sign him to a two year deal with a team option for the third or even longer if possible. What I'm getting at is if sending him to the NBDL counts as his first year it make smore sense to let him play oversees another year and then sign him. But if he stays in the U.S. I prefer to have him in Cleveland practicing with the team and working out with the team, and learning by playing with and against Z.

Hell, throw Gooden in there as well. All three of them need to go on a huge protein diet and hit the weights as much as they can. All three have the talent to play their positions, they are all just undersized horizontally. :chuckles:

If you guys need AndriskiPryzMcIlvaine to gain some weight, why not snatch Tractor out of Denny's and hire him as a personal trainer? :chuckles:

Seriously, you guys couldn't have done any better with this pick. If he gets stronger, he'll be servicable. That's a big IF though.
