Summer League Preview / Review

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
oops forgot to add the quote about Martin from earlier in the thread and why should we be happy with Jackson playing well against rookies and undrafted players in my earlier post.

Yeah he didn't even play a full game so you can't call him a rookie, he is like 24 isn't he though?

Luke is racking up some great assist numbers. They could be even better if he was playing with real NBA caliber scorers(though it is probably harder to get assists being guarded by NBA caliber defenders). Maybe they are right about Luke being able to handle some minutes at pg. Sounds like a terrific passer.

Luke would probably be one of the last options at playing back-up PG for the Cavs. Assuming we get Sarunas, we've got Eric Snow, LeBron James and Larry Hughes who can handle the rock.

The Cavaliers will be stocking up on good ball handlers in Jackson, James, Snow, Huhges and Saruans. With one or two of these guys on the floor, we will have no worries sticking to our offense.

Chatting with CBBI about Olumide Oyedeji. He has been solid in summer league and with 3 years NBA experience he is a decent show at sticking.

A pal of mine on another site was in Vegas and watched a game. He told me Marty was stroking NBA treys and had nice finesse moves in the post. Plus he blocked some of the Boston players. While we all agree Marty probably needs time in the NBDL, if you think about it, he's probably at least at Diop's level if not better. And that's a guy who was on our active roster last year. While this year's team is better, I wonder if having Marty as a very low priority big man on the bench would be such a crime.

The Cleveland Cavaliers held on in a tightly contested game to beat the Portland Trail Blazers, 79-74. Matt Freijie hit two free throws with 10.3 seconds left to push the lead to five (79-74), and seal the eventual win. The win pushed the Cavs summer league record to a perfect 5-0.

Blake Stepp led the Cavs in scoring with 17 points (6-9 FG), while Olumide Oyedeji had 16 points (6-12 FG) and 13 rebounds. Luke Jackson pitched in 15 points (4-12 FG) and Ime Udoka had 13 points (5-6 FG).

Cleveland finished the game shooting 43 percent (26-61 FG), while Portland shot 48 percent (26-54 FG).

Portland was led in scoring by Sebastian Telfair's 24 points (6-12 FG, 10-14 FT). Travis Outlaw had 20 points (7-14 FG, 6-9 FT) and five rebounds in the loss.

The Cavs had a two point lead (45-43) at the half. Jackson led the Cavs in scoring with 13 points (4-5 FG), while Ime Udoka pitched in 10 points (4-4 FG).

Telfair led the Blazers with 16 first half points (5-7 FG), while Outlaw had 12 points (5-8 FG).

Cleveland shot 58 percent (15-26 FG) at the break, while Portland shot 53 percent (17-32 FG).

The Cavaliers (5-0) battle the Blazers (2-2) again on Friday at 2 p.m. Portland faces Washington Wizards tomorrow at 12:30 p.m.

^Wow, another 7 footer shooting threes? Can he hit the 10-12 foot jumper though?

I liked his signing but assumed at the time it would be at least 2 years before he could help us out. He needs major strength training. I say let him down in the NBDL for a year, bring him up at the beginning of Year 2 so he can see what he needs to work on, go back down and play full time, then call him up for the playoffs.

Yeah. Everything I heard about the kid has been negative so far and it was refreshing to hear the other side of the story. If the kid was completely and utterly terrible, you wouldn't even waste a second round pick if he didn't have any redeeming qualities. If Marty were on the roster, he wouldn't play much and would be Cleveland's version of the human victory cigar. But if Diop could make our team, I'm just saying Marty could make it too.

There is a difference though Remy.

Diop had an NBA body (or close to it anyway) coming into the league, he just had no basketball skills.

Martynas actually has some decent skills, he's just a toothpick right now.
