ABOUT THE CAVS. . .

Tracy Boulian/PD File
Recently acquired Cavaliers guard Mo Williams provides another voice of leadership while on the floor.
Mike Brown raved about how Mo Williams rallied the Cavs (through defense and moving on offense) in the third quarter of their victory over Charlotte. The coach was pleased because Williams has shown leadership ability. He has received immediate credibility with his new teammates because they know him as a good player in Milwaukee -- and LeBron James loves and respects Williams. Rather than seeing Williams as a threat, James is glad to have someone else who can speak up and get the attention of the other players.
In every sport, the stars set the tone for how the team behaves. But that's especially true in the NBA, where most coaches don't last more than three years with one team. For example, starting his fourth season, Brown is the senior coach in the Central Division. As he says, "LeBron allows me to coach him." San Antonio's Gregg Popovich uses the same wording about Tim Duncan. This is James' team, and he's willing to share it with Williams because the guard from Milwaukee has an outgoing personality that attracts players to him.

A few weeks ago, rookie J.J. Hickson was late for a the team bus and missed it. This became a big deal on the Cavs because James is always on time, often early. The other players follow his example. So what Hickson did stood out. Hickson just turned 20 and had only one year of college. A single mom raised him first, but she died when he was in the seventh grade. Then he moved in with his grandmother, and his grandmother is now in Cleveland helping him adjust. Hickson has a chance to make an impact inside as he attacks the rim for dunks, can block shots and is extremely fast running down the court. Like most rookies, he has struggled on defense.

When Shawn Kemp was with the Cavs, he was notoriously late. He also had creative excuses, once claiming he was late because his dog fell asleep in front of his car -- and being an animal lover, Kemp did not want to wake up the dog by starting the car. So he waited until the dog awoke.

The Cavs have been thrilled with how Ben Wallace has rebounded, blocked shots and moved on defense in the first two games. They want to keep his minutes in the 25 range to help him stay away from back spasms. Wallace had 14 rebounds and six blocks in 43 minutes heading into Saturday night's game at New Orleans.
