The Athletic

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Now that we have been up and running for about two months, just curious what everyone thinks of The Athletic. Who subscribed? Who still thinks I'm an idiot for doing this? What do you like? What do you hate? Be honest.

I know RCF is Cavs-centric, but I've been really happy with the Browns and Indians stuff we've produced, too. TJ has a deep understanding of baseball, while Travis Sawchik is a star. Some of his stuff on Lindor has been next level.

I think Zac has been great on the Browns and Dustin Fox will be terrific doing videos. The plan is to add a second Browns writer before the start of training camp and we're beginning the process of adding Columbus-based staff, too.

Anyway, just thought I'd check in and see what everyone thinks, where we're nailing it and where we can improve. And as an FYI, finishing the rewrites on the book this week. Due out in the fall. You can pre-order here.

To all those who have subscribed to The Athletic, thank you. To those who haven't, we're coming for you. Thanks.

Love it so far. I originally signed up just for your final thoughts but I find myself checking it more and more daily (hoping there is a new article). I especially have enjoyed TJ and the advanced statistics they are writing about in the baseball columns.

I subscribed shortly after this thread began--and so far, I'm definitely a big fan of it. I especially love your work on the Cavaliers, per usual. Not only is it the same high quality stuff, but it seems that since you've made the jump you've been able to add a little more of your own pizzazz than you may not have been able to share in the past due to restrictions. I look forward to following throughout the playoffs and in the future.

I know it was a dead time of the off-season, and Zac has been rocking it in the Browns section the past few weeks, but that was my biggest initial complaint about the site. There just wasn't much to read on the Browns when I initially joined. However, since that point, Zac has been tearing it up with draft-related pieces--and a second writer pre-camp will only help.

My only remaining question is regarding Ohio State football. Is that an area that will be coming to the Athletic in the future?

Can't comment on Browns or Indians stuff, but enjoying the Cavs coverage. Can tell the final thoughts are a little more open than they were at the ABJ. Really like the feature pieces (JR, Deron, Sanders, etc.), and having it emailed to me makes it easy to pull up in the morning while eating breakfast and whatnot.

If you guys can successfully cover Ohio State Football the same way you do Cleveland sports, you'll certainly gain a huge increase in subscribers. People are even crazier in Columbus when it comes to football than Cleveland, and with it being more white collar they have no problem shelling out cash to read more about it. I have numerous friends that pay subscription fees to recruiting sites just to have a jump on a normie like myself to who OSU's QB will be in 2035.

Yes, in fact we're starting to look at Ohio State this week. Not sure when we'll have the hire in place, but certainly before B1G media days and fall camp. And we'll have an emphasis on recruiting.

As to the earlier statement about a lack of Browns coverage early, that's true. Launching without a Browns writer wasn't ideal, but we're playing the long game. We didn't want to rush into it with just anyone. We wanted to get it right and I'm confident Zac was right to start it off. And as I said earlier, we should have another Browns writer on staff before the start of training camp.

Thanks for the feedback! It sounds like things are just going to continue to boom, and I'm looking forward to it.

Maybe the Athletic wants to scoop up some former ESPN talent to bolster its roster?

Not sure they have the subscription base yet to justify what some of those guys may be charging. Although they might in larger markets.

I've been a fan of your stuff for awhile. I think you guys are doing a great job. It feels just like your stuff at the ABJ but in a cooler format and on a broader sports website. I'm really enjoying some of the sabremetric stuff Travis (and obviously TJ) is using in his articles on the Tribe.

Also, obviously it's for a different team, but I'm a huge fan of The Athletic's Raptors coverage. It's really detailed and fascinating to read.

With the vast amount of Ohio State coverage out there, that is going to be an important hire. Looking forward to seeing who it is.

Got it and love it. Looking forward to seeing the continued developments.

The post-game thoughts tonight were incredibly insightful. People are really missing out by not buying this.

Ohio State fans.

The Athletic is starting to form quite the crew across the different platforms... Might want to consider jumping on board.
