The Boston Celtics Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I almost think I'd rather see Orlando in the postseason. Without Turk, the Cavs match up a lot better against them. It remains to be seen how they play Boston (season opener doesn't count), but I would imagine that Boston is going to be worn down come playoff time. They are just too old.

I have heard this the past 2 seasons in which they won the title and took Orlando to game 7 without KG.

The "big 3" are probably slowing down a bit this season, but they have more depth than ever with Daniels, Sheed, and Baby coming off the bench, and Rondo and Perkins are playing the best they ever have.

Not sure how the home opener doesn't count. I know we are much better now than we were then, but the same matchup problems present itself. If we stand pat, what do we do when they throw Sheed and KG in the game? Z or Shaq certainly cannot guard either without conceding an open jumper and we don't have another big that can matchup besides Andy. You could throw Powe in there with Andy, but that is assuming he comes back healthy. I would love to see LBJ at the 4 and guard Sheed since all Sheed does is stand on the 3 point line anyways, but for some reason we rarely seem to go with LBJ at the 4 unless the opposing team is playing small.

Kevin Garnett to sit another 10 days

Twelve days ago, Celtics [team stats] management said Kevin Garnett would miss roughly 10 days with a hyperextended right knee.

Doc Rivers obviously had to amend that number last night, and offered up another 10-day window for the forward’s return.

But this time the Celtics coach believes he is right. The reason was Garnett’s workout yesterday, his first full-fledged run, minus the odd shootaround, since Dec. 30.

“In the next 10 days, in that area,” Rivers said before last night’s 102-96 loss to the Atlanta Hawks. “Now I’m pretty sure it’s in the next 10 days. He started working out today for the first time. Now it’s just a conditioning thing. We want to make sure he’s strong and back in shape, because he literally hasn’t done anything. Ten days to two weeks is what it will take, but I think it will be 10 days with him.

“Trying to hold him down for those extra four will be very difficult. (But) he biked and ran (yesterday). It was pretty good.”

Indeed, management is now convinced that Garnett’s knee is sound, and that he simply has to work back into shape.

“I’m confident because of what our doctors and trainers say,” general manager Danny Ainge said. “They tell us the knee is good.”

That only accentuates Garnett’s patience, a virtue he developed last season in the months leading up to his right knee surgery to sand down a bone spur.

“For him it’s been a minor miracle . . . it’s been very good,” Rivers said of Garnett’s ability to stay off the floor without imploding. “It was good for him, I guess, but I’ve never been a big believer in that whole rest thing. That’s been the talk in the league for the last three or four years. But I don’t remember Michael (Jordan) sitting out for three or four weeks so he could be ready for the playoffs.

“I think they like to play, personally, but in this case it was the smart thing to do because it was only going to get worse if he played. Players want to play. If you sit them it puts them out of it more.”

This 16 game stretch that starts January 25th could go a long way in deciding the #1 seed in the East. There are a lot of tough games and the bolded games are all games I could see them losing.

@ ORL, @ ATL back to back is very tough. That should give them at least one loss. Then the next game is vs the Lakers. Hopefully they lose at least 2 out of 3 there.

Then they play ORL again followed by a 5 game west coast trip with all tough home opponents in NO, SAC, LAL, POR, and DEN. Portland game is on 2nd night of back to back. They should lose at least 2 of these games, I could see 3 losses easily.

Then of course there is the game vs us.

If we can keep it up through February, I can see us building a little lead in the standings against Boston. They have a tough schedule coming up in a couple weeks.

In comparison, after the Clippers game, we have 12 of our next 18 games at home which will rap up February, including a 7 game home stand. I see 4 "tough" teams in that span. We play LA at home, Orlando twice, @ Boston, and vs Denver. Besides that, I think the rest of the games are against .500 teams or below.

I am looking forward to the next 6 or 7 weeks and the trade deadline. Games against LA, BOS, ORL, and DEN are coming up. :hyper:

Actually, the only cakewalk on that schedule is New Jersey. The Clippers have been playing really well as of late so that might be a tough game for them. Glad to see that the schedule is going to catch up with Boston and LA and see how they fair against tough teams on the road.

Celtics forward Rasheed Wallace was scratched about 30 minutes before tonight's game with a foot injury. He'll miss about a week, according to Doc Rivers.

"Looks like a week, maybe," said Rivers. "It’s day-to-day, but I would say maybe a week. Maybe less. I think it’s toe, foot. I’m not sure what it is. I don’t know exactly. I know it started hurting him last night after the game. In the locker room he was saying his foot was bothering him. And then this morning it got bigger I guess. But when he came to the game he thought he was going to play. He actually went out and and tried to warm up, and he came in and said, “Hey Coach, I can’t go.” And we did x-rays and all that, and they were negative, but they also showed that he probably needs a break.”

I'm a fan of Doc Rivers, but he comes off kinda slow here:

He's probably thinking:

"Oh Shit, the glue and tape isn't holding...C'mon baby, hold together! Sheed, no! Not you too! I'll let you hoist as many 3's as you want, please don't be hurt! "

I'd love to know how the x-rays showed "that he probably needs a break." Rivers is as dumb as a stump. :chuckles:

All jokes aside, if there's something Rivers isn't, it's dumb. Sheed isn't motivated this year and hasn't been motivated for a while now. This is a political way of calling out a player

Of course he is dumb, he is Celtics's coach:chuckles:. Some dirty fouls against Atlanta... Bunch of d-bags. :thumbdown

depending on the extent of the injuries, they may be better off for their thirtysomethings taking some time off.

and better now than in May.

Boston Celtics 4 vet stars: Combined 134 years old, and 143,559 minutes played

kevin-garnett.jpgTony Gutierrez, Associated PressKevin Garnett is one of the Boston Celtics' stars who are not only aging, but dealing with injuries, too.Yes, the Cleveland Cavaliers have some older players who are integral to the team's championship hopes.

Center Shaquille O'Neal is 37, and center Zydrunas Ilgauskas and guard Anthony Parker are both 34.

But how about those Boston Celtics, the 2008 NBA champions who - with the Cavaliers and Orlando Magic - are considered as the top championship contenders in the Eastern Conference?

While the Cavaliers seldom ask O'Neal or Ilgauskas to play even 30 minutes a game, and while Parker, too, isn't burdened with heavy minutes, the Celtics ask much more of their older, and most important, veterans.

Click here for the Celtics home page on cleveland.com, and the accompanying Associated Press story that details Boston's current age- and injury-related problems.

The Celtics have 46 more regular season games to play before the playoffs begin, and they're already leaking oil.

No wonder. Forward Rasheed Wallace (35), guard Ray Allen (34), forward Kevin Garnett (33) and guard-forward Paul Pierce (32) have played a combined 143,559 minutes in their NBA careers.

That's just professional game minutes. Add in their college, high school and youth games; practices at all levels; playground ball and shooting in the driveway; airplane, car, bus, bicycle and tricycle rides to games and practices, and...you get the idea.

Garnett, Allen and Pierce still play heavy minutes, and Wallace (foot), at 23.2 minutes per game, is hobbling along with Garnett (knee) and Pierce (knee). Celtics' 1980's legends Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, Robert Parish and Danny Ainge might have fresher legs and have to suit up for their old team by March.

Players: Garnett Biggest Trash Talker In NBA

According to his peers, Kevin Garnett is the biggest trash talker in the NBA.

"Sports Illustrated released the results of a new poll that asked NBA players who was the league's biggest trash talker," wrote Alan Hahn of Newsday. "Super-intense Kevin Garnett took first place by a landslide of 62 percent out of 173 NBA players polled. Kobe Bryant (7%) was second, followed by Rasheed Wallace (5%). Fourth on the list was Nate Robinson (3%), who tied with Paul Pierce."

In other news, the world is round
