The Official Game of Thrones [A Song of Ice and Fire] Thread (includes spoilers)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
It's not a stretch though, they've shown they are semi intelligent beings with the rock throw from the hound. Idk how big north of the wall is, I'm assuming decent size. Do the timing might be skewed, but it's not a stretch to think they got the chains from a port at hardhome.

So is your argument that they plundered Hardhome of all of its chains way back when and have been carrying them this entire time in case they came across a dragon? Or that they saw Viserion fall and recalled the time they saw chains at Hardhome, went back to get them, then returned to drag him out? And how many wights do we think drowned by diving underwater with these heavy ass chains trying to secure the dragon?

No joke, would love to see a short film made detailing all of this.

By the way, with regards to Jon telling Gendry that he's the fastest...that's probably just the polite way of Jon telling him that he's the only one there that they don't know they can trust in a fight. Look at the rest of that roster:

The Hound has a reputation as one of the most dangerous fighters in Westeros.

Tormund grew up north of the Wall and lived there basically his entire life. He's likely killed hundreds of men and has fought against wights before at Hardhome.

Thoros, if nothing else, has a reputation as a fucking mad man who doesn't shy away from a fight. And at that point he wasn't capable of running anyway.

Beric is a mid-tier lord, which means he's been trained by a man-at-arms his entire life. He can also make his sword catch fire, which is undoubtedly useful against creatures vulnerable to fire.

Jon is the leader, and the only one of the group who has actually killed a white walker.

Jorah is another man who was trained professionally for most of his young life, and has spent his adult life fighting for Dany.

Meanwhile, Gendry is a bastard blacksmith who no one save Davos has ever seen fight, and is the youngest of the group to boot.

I mean, I guess Jon could have sent one of the remaining redshirts back instead, but I assume those were either wildlings like Tormund or members of the Night's Watch. Either way, they'd be much more accustomed to fighting and surviving beyond the Wall than the kid who has never seen snow before.

Wait, the undead can drown?

The last episode was insane. I do kind of wish they would have stretched these episodes to be slightly longer or made more to account for some of the time travel stuff. I think a happy medium between this season and season 5 would have been an amicable place to be.

I wish Viserion would have just fell and crashed into the mountains. The fact that the walkers couldn't risk going through the ice and into the water to kill the group coupled with the fact they had to get into the water and wrap chains around Viserion is just so bad. That was my only major gripe because it's just so conflicting with them falling in and being basically worthless during the battle. Oh, and was there a Home Depot where they got all the fucking chains?

All the talk of Dany's secession and bedside scene with Jon is leading to a full on incestual bang sesh for the ages next week and I am so here for it lol. Also I think we're getting the Clegane Bowl next week finally. I think we're going to see a Hound vs Mountain duel for the ages. There was a bounty on the Hound for deserting during the battle against Stannis and I think both sides will concede to let them fight.

Bran has been useless but I think that's the angle. I think he's about to have a big hand in what happens from now until the end of the show. I hate the Arya/Sansa story line it just to me seems too forced. I think Sansa will try to have her killed and likely use Littlefoot to do it. She didn't have the sack to make an attempt on Joffrey at any point she's not going to whack her sister.

I don't think it has anything to do with them not willing to risk going through the ice and into the water. It's just, to them, what's the point? These people are stranded on an island in the cold with limited supplies and are completely surrounded. Meanwhile, the white walkers have nothing but time, as they seem to be immortal, or at least of a significantly longer lifespan than a traditional human. They can simply sit there and let the ice freeze back over, giving them an easy path to the humans, or they can try to attack and watch half their army sink pointlessly.

Further, we can at least assume that it's possible that the white walkers knew that, if they waited long enough, help would come for Jon and his companions, and letting that help arrive may have very much been their intent. The white walkers didn't seem even remotely shocked when the dragons showed up, and they were ready with weapons to use against them. We know that various people see visions in the flames of future events, so it's not outlandish to think that the walkers may be capable of this as well (not necessarily through the flames, but Bran has his own method of seeing future visions as well, and there may be more ways too).

I'll agree that them having the chains on hand was a little silly, but overall I don't really have a problem with their tactic of sitting there and waiting for the ice to freeze again. As mentioned, they have all the time in the world and an army that doesn't require food or shelter. The humans, on the other hand, were slowly freezing to death and would eventually starve as well, meaning that, when the ice finally did freeze, the wights would be attacking a weakened force.

You ever been to the mountains bro? They've got chain services around every exit.

A lot of these "why did they have chains, why did they not kill them, why did he wait..." Are explained if you believe, as I have for a long time, that he's either like Bran, a greenseer, or the visions in the fires have been to help him out from someone on the outside.

Aka, he knew the dragons were coming.

Some people think the night king is Bran, but I tend to agree with you. He knew he was getting a dragon. Jon Snow was bait.

Yeah, it seems pretty clear that they knew the dragons were coming based on how the walkers reacted. They didn't even flinch, and their leader just calmly had a spear handed to him and took one of them out of the sky.

It also explains why they waited to attack until shortly before the dragons arrived. Surely they could have just chucked spears at Jon and his friends, but instead they waited patiently.
