"The Power of LeBron" (Chris Ballard / SI)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Perhaps next month Rick Barry will break it down at newstands near you... :)

I agree that most of the "Lebron skills" articles are about "what he still can't do" rather than "how he harnesses his skills". But there's still a lot of time and opportunity for those pieces. Especially once he wins it all.

What shocked me (again) about the piece is the reminder of how great his passing was even before the laser surgery. He's probably still getting used to playing with that kind of improvement to his eyes.

Thought the article did a decent job linking the physical abnormalities (ie. gifts) to some of his skills, though. I hadn't thought much about how his weight and the use of leverage could let him guard a guy four inches taller than himself.

But yeah, that bit about the laser surgery:

Thus during high school and his first five years in the NBA, James operated in something of a haze, which must make all the players who got torched by him feel great. Only James claims it never affected his game. "I could see everything on the court. I never had a problem with here" -- he holds his hands to the side of his head, indicating his peripheral vision -- "it was right here in front that I had the problem."

Then, a little over a year ago, James got Lasik surgery. Now, as he puts it, "it's kind of cool, because I can see stuff in the distance. I'm like, So that's what that is! Pressed, he admits it's probably improved his on-court performance too, saying, "Well, I have gotten better."

:chuckles::chuckles::chuckles:

What in the hell? I wonder how much this has had to do with his shooting improvement (obviously not as much as the form, of course). I mean, if the problem was what was in front of him -- that being the basket -- well, seems like being able to see helps you shoot. Who knew? ;)

Anyway, neat article, I just wish someone would write something about his skills and not just his physique.

yeah it was a tad homoerotic but in a world of sports where grown men kiss, cry, hug and slap each others butts with abandon i think a healthy man crush kinda goes with the territory lol..

Dunno, I thought Bron was on a weight training regimen dating back to high school and through his NBA career. Anyone care to clarify what the difference is?

It was a little confusing. I think the one point he was trying to make is that Lebron doesn't lift for bulk, yet he's built like an NFL player.
Not really sure what he meant by just started "working out seriously only last June". Maybe it became more regular or regimented...but he has always been good about lifting.

LeBron was personnally made by God!

God apparently had "regard for human life" when he created Lebron. Seriously though, my wife thinks I'm nuts the way I fawn over this guys physical gifts. It's just not something you see very often when both the physical and mental align to create a practically unstoppable force. I liken him to Tiger Woods the way he bridges the two together.

A while back I thought I remembered reading somewhere that he graduated St.V-St.M with a 3.75 GPA. Can anyone confirm this?

I talked to a kid who went to high school with him once. He said LeBron could pretty much have his homework done and shipped to his house by whoever he asked.

that explains it. I didnt think the was that smart, he's not the most eloquent speaker.

Who is going to say no to the best basketball player in Ohio, well all of high school/college? I mean really the dude was what 6'7" in HS? And what 240? I wouldn't say no to that man. Although mind you I wouldn't do his HW, but I just wouldn;t say no to him lol.

Just say his name: Wally.

Shaq has a massive habit of kissing everyone he can get his hands on.

OK. I'll let you all in on one of the bigger secrets. Before media day, out in Independence this past October, Lebron got on the scales for Max and Stan ...he was likely a little heavier than playng weight then because he'd just been travelling ...but, he came in a shade over 270 ..about 271 and some ounces ... I'd bet he's playing at about 267 right now ...and he's just a hair under 6'8 without shoes.

Now, AV they wanted everyone to think he was 6'11, about 260 ...but the relaity was he was only about 243 I think, and he's around 6'9 1/2 without shoes.
