The Strus is Loose

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I think the window of shifting from rock musician to pro basketball player is closing.

A few months back he was our catalyst, feels like I kind of forget he's out there now. Will he get his spark back post injury in the playoffs?

I thought he was pretty critical in the Indy game. 9 assists in the early game and a big Oboard at the end of the game.

So far in this playoff series, Strus has been a positive overall even though his shot hasn't been falling.

What I'm concerned about, is early in the year, Strus used to move constantly without the ball, and it resulted in great looks and a tougher assignment for the opposing defense. These days, he just stands around on the perimeter a lot more.

This was one of my biggest fears, because he was great in Miami at off-ball movement, and now after a season in Cleveland that's largely gone away.

I hope the team runs more sets that can utilize Strus's movement more, as it can help revitalize the offense.

I miss this as well.

However, the minutes we need him to play make this unsustainable or less effective. He did so much running early in the year I think he got gassed and broke down a bit.

An ideal situation has Strus running flat out for 25-28 mins a game in that role and not pushing 35+ but in a more stand on the perimeter role as he is now. Obviously personnel impacts this.

He still busts his gut for us, his rebounding is a feature of his game that has surprised me this year.

If he's running around like a madman his %s are going to slip, especially if he's giving it his all on defense and the boards. It's a delicate balance. Some off ball screens to free him up are exactly what we need.

Cavs probably won't need those shots to fall in the first round. If they make it to the second round though, I hope things can improve.

In a first-round playoff series in which Orlando is shooting 34 percent overall and a staggering 23 percent from the 3-point range (hence its 0-2 deficit), the Cavaliers aren’t really shooting much better. We bring up Strus and Niang because, well, they were added to the mix after last year’s early postseason exit because it was clear the Cavs needed outside shooting.
So far, Strus and Niang are a combined 2-of-18 from 3-point range against the Magic. If you had bet on Evan Mobley (3-of-8) to be a better 3-point shooter ...
But the Cavs, who face the Magic in Game 3 at 7 p.m. Thursday in Orlando, are winning these games because of Strus and Niang, not despite them. The franchise needed more than a shooting boost after being drummed out of the playoffs by the New York Knicks last April. It needed more competent veterans with playoff know-how.
Strus and Niang have brought that much and then some, even if their shots aren’t falling....
Strus is 2-of-10 from deep and 5-of-15 shooting overall. But he’s tied for second on the Cavs with 18 rebounds through two playoff games and is doing an excellent job guarding Orlando’s Franz Wagner, one of the Magic’s best (few?) options on offense.
“In the NBA, you get labels of being a shooter,” said Niang, who spoke after practice Wednesday. Strus was not made available to reporters.
“Max, even more than me, I think he impacts games more than just his shooting,” Niang continued. “There’s so much more to basketball. Being able to impact the game defensively with your energy, your smarts. ”

At least Niang didn't miss is opportunity to talk to reporters ...
