What a fucking mess.

The message trying to be conveyed is a very delicate one and matters how it is delivered. Coming from Kelly it undoubtedly sounds very different than it would from Trump.

And, as @MediumBaller pointed out, all it would have taken is clarification and an apology. But as usual, Trump's preceding and subsequent actions just make a hash of everything.

Kelly was pretty dramatic in his defense there too. Like that whole "some things use to be sacred in this country" bullshit. He starts with women... Yeaaaah I'm sure women were treated much better when you were growing up Kelly, nice job using a rape controversy for a cheap jab. He seemed to allude to Gold Star families not be sacred because of the convention, as if it wasn't Trump that crossed the line against the Khans.

Can someone offer a play-by-play?

Trump said Congresswoman Wilson lied when she said that Trump told the widow of Sgt La David Jonson that "He knew what he signed up for" He flat out denied saying it and said that he had proof. Gen. Kelly stood up at the podium at the press briefing today and confirmed that Trump indeed did say that and then Gen. Kelly proceed to attack Congresswoman Wilson for sharing that information which proved Trump lied BUT GENERAL KELLY COMPLETELY IGNORED THE FACT THAT BOTH THE WIDOW AND MOTHER OF SGT LA DAVID JOHNSON WERE ALSO LISTENING TO THE CALL AND BOTH EXPRESSED THAT TRUMP DID DISRESPECT THEM WITH HIS COMMENTS!!!!!

Plus Gen. Kelly let Trump basically drag his dead son into this and also was the one who initially politicized this whole thing by trying to attack President Obama by making false claims that President Obama never called families of fallen service members, comments in which he got called out for lying about and had to retract.

GEN Kelly is an honorable man. But he also has a job to do and he is doing it...

He should offer this advice to Trump:

And that's what the Fox says.

I doubt Trump has read either Sun Tzu or Rommel.

That being said, we're pretty much at the point where one side thinks everything he does is horrible, and the other (which includes me) has simply tuned out criticisms. Too much effort to separate the wheat from the chaff at this point. I think Democrats did themselves and perhaps the country a disservice by going scorched earth from day one.

I do think him mentioning Kelly's son was insensitive and wrong.

I've decided it is German general quote day. How long before I get accused of being a Nazi?

Do you have a point though?

Not in regard to any specific argument. Its a general post that hopefully provides context to all political discussion in these threads.
My general approach to posting on here has been to criticize obvious partisan rhetoric & hyperbole as unhelpful and intellectually dishonest. You might recall how I made a big deal over the assertion that 40 million Americans were starving. I just think its important that outlandish statements aren't allowed to stand unchallenged. I think we can step up our discussion to a higher level if we can just filter out some of the BS that's being fed to us by various media outlets.
And I agree that the right also uses devious tactics. But those tactics aren't as pervasive on this forum, probably because they aren't as pervasive in the mainstream media.
People that lean left and people that lean right should be able to have civilized political discussions. If we can't we are in big trouble as a nation.
We might as well start here. It is no secret that RCF's leadership isn't thrilled with the quality of these threads. The potential is here for excellent discussion. We should aspire to that. The first step is to dampen the partisanship and reduce the copying of partisan media sources IMO. There are plenty of other places to go on the internet for a partisan bitch-slapping.

Well, we've established that he can't read, so that would make sense.

And on a serious note, would anyone here be surprised if it came out that Trump has never read a book in his life? I certainly wouldn't. He doesn't strike me as a particularly literate man.

The Art of the Deal is the only book you'll ever need to read.

I feel like that’s definitely one of the blurbs on the sleeve of the hard cover.

A Review of the New York Times Best-Seller, The Art of the Deal, by Donald J. Trump:

"I, Donald J. Trump, had deals so good that I had someone write a book about it. This book was written by some dweeb I paid to write it. I have people do things for me. He wrote a book, how does one do that? People tell me it is hard. But this book he wrote, it is tremendous. The deals are so good. The best deals that I made were done so well it is almost an art. I became the king of New York and it was great. I am on the New York Times list for being the best. I am the best at making deals. And art. Art is amazing and I have the best art. In the fabulous Trump Tower I have the greatest art. I have paintings so good that they are worth more than that dog Rosie O'Donnell. Dogs are great. They are tremendous animals. I have a painting of dogs. It is called "Dogs at Cards." The original. It is so good it cost a fortune because I am told that dogs do not play cards. Did you know this? Dogs don't play cards but my art is so good I have a picture of dogs playings cards -something that dogs don't do. Dogs don't play cards, but they do for me. Dogs love me.

Buy the book. Make deals like me and you will have tremendous dog art."
