Trade Rumor(s)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Unless the Knicks really like cedi osman we're not getting melo. I'm all for some package around frye shump RJ and birdman but New York won't bite on that. Unless some 3rd team gets involved and wants one of them for a first. Frye is unplayable vs the Warriors and shump freezes up in big games so I don't mind losing them. Melo would be amazing off the bench but he'd never accept that role. The best we could hope for is staggering his minutes and letting him run the 2nd unit as the PF with TT at C.

But regardless it's not happening. He's got a shit ton of money left on his deal and isn't getting any better. The best we could hope for is a surprise buyout. Which again isn't happening.

It's basically impossible, but I'll waste two minutes - cause I don't want to work on actual things:

1.) Buyout won't happen. Carmelo is at most indifferent about leaving, isn't going to leave some part of $70M on the table.

2.) Trade involving TT or Love won't happen. Cavs aren't stupid, and those two players are better than Carmelo at this point. And younger. And on better contracts. And already fit in with this team.

3.) NYK won't be interested in anything we have to offer (Shumpert + Frye + Jefferson). They might be interested in Osman, but that isn't enough.

4.) As the Cavs, I would do a trade that sends out Shumpert + Frye + Jefferson + Osman for Anthony. He's on the downside of his career, but as a 3rd/4th option in this offense he's a matchup nightmare. It would cost the Cavs about $30M this year against the cap, and more next year -- but the money you will get off jersey sales alone might offset that.

5.) You would have to find other teams to flip Shumpert/Frye to. Both players do actually have value in this league. They are under great contracts and the value of 3PT shooting has never been higher.

6.) Any trade like this only happens if Carmelo uses his no trade clause to force a trade to the Cavs. He'd also have to waive his 15% trade kicker.

7.) At the end of the day the numbers don't work out. Carmelo won't be traded.

But hey this is a Cavs fan board, it's fun to invent random trade scenarios so here:

Back to the real world.

Shump Frye Jefferson and Osman for Carmelo would be a great deal for us, you don't hesitate for a minute to do that IMO, but as many have said it ain't happening.

Thanks to Lyuokdea and others for actually analyzing this impossible/long shot prospect...crazy fantasy trades are a big part of what the whole NBA online BB experience is all about. Everybody needs a little fantasy in the middle of their work day. DARE TO DREAM PEOPLE

0% chance that we get Tucker.

He doesn't fit in any of our TPEs, and his contract is also too big to do Jefferson + Anderson.

Any deal to get Tucker means you have to send out either Shumpert or Frye.

Shumpert is as good (maybe better) than Tucker. He is younger, on a better (long term) contract, and already fits in with the team.

The only possibility is that Tucker is some auxiliary piece in a bigger trade. But the fact that Tucker is too big for the TPE makes even those deals hard to work out (e.g. Shumpert + Anderson for Dudley + Tucker doesn't work either, nor does Shumpert + Anderson + Evans (NO) + Tucker)

Easy to read the tea leaves on a couple guys...

Bogut is being shelved for near future by Dallas....he's getting moved. They don't want to risk injury.

I think based on minutes, Kyle O'Quinn is on his way out of NYC. With Noah out last night, Hornacek still only played O'Quinn 10 mins. I think NYC likes what they have in Hernangomez and would prefer to let him grow.

I'd take either guy honestly. Both big bodies that are plus defenders.

You don't shelve a guy to buy him out. You only shelve them for a trade.

Not sure we'd want to make a trade for either of these guys.

Agreed. Both guys are likely to be traded not bought-out. I didn't imply anything different. I'd make a deal for the right asking price on either....

No way I'd trade Shumpert for Bogut. Makes no sense given the type of team we've been trying to assemble here.

I wouldn't either...I'd consider any of our over-seas assets. Not sure that is enough to get it done, but I believe Cleveland could really use a big body at Center to spell TT...espcially against some of the bigger centers in the league. I'd love O'Quinn or Bogut, but based on our assets it doesn't look realistic.

I was just poiting out that these guys are likely on the move based on how they're being handled by their respective teams....

It's actually impossible to create a trade for Bogut that doesn't involve one of: LBJ/KI/Love/TT/Smith/Shumpert/Frye

So, unless you think Bogut is worth one of those guys, then there's no reason to think about him (except for as a buyout).

To Clarify a Lot of Trade Ideas That are Floating Around. There are only two types of players that make any sense:

1.) Players who make less than $4.837M. That's the size of our biggest TPE. We can acquire these players either for free, or (depending on their value), we could trade any number of assets: Cedi, McRae, Felder, 2022 1st round pick, etc.

You could see a trade where Jefferson/Anderson gets traded away for a player in this range, but that's a salary cap move, not a necessity.

2.) Players who more valuable than Iman Shumpert. - You could also list Channing Frye here in theory. If a player makes more than $4.837M, we have to trade Shumpert/Frye (or theoretically LBJ/KI/Love/TT/Smith) for them. We're not going to do that unless it makes basketball sense (this year), to obtain that player. You can technically trade Korver for players making up to about $7.5M, but you can't include him in a deal for any player making more than that.

This simplifies things. The dumb Tucker rumors, the Bogut rumors (non buyout), etc, should all be thrown out. The Cavs have no reasonable method of obtaining a mediocre player who makes more than $4.837M.
