Tyronn Lue has been fired

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Lets talk about Lue Next season. As I have mentioned multiple times. This really wasn't Lues boat. he took command halfway through the Voyage and made it to port.

Now this offseason Lue will be building his own boat and his philosophies style will become more prevalent in the nuts and bolts of construction.

Griffin will be filling out the roster to suit what Lue wants to do.

Lue commented that the offensive sets didn't have much in the way of Elbow plays. The elbow was there as evidenced by AV's knack for finding the spot open but not really an primary motion just a secondary option that Lebron or Irving may or may not respond to..

I see a big Change here. Lue will bring in an Elbow package that Allows Love to capitalize on the strong and weakside of the offense. This will bring in more off the ball cuts and Allow Love to drop back into the perimeter or move to the post on either side . It will also give Lebron and irving a cut guy when they drive ( Love set up on perimeter then cuts tot he elbow once the drive initiates.

Lue has a familiarity balancing the offensive games of three dynamic scorers and he will be looking to apply that to his roster.

Defensively Lue brought in a guy who had a completely different defensive philosophy than himself. I think there was a long term plan to this as it appears Lue wants to install to base defenses. This could be either one for the starters and another for the bench unit or dictated by opponents playstyle.

Lue has a Core that will be entering its third year together. They are familiar with each other and know where guys are most comfortable and be able to anticipate what others are doing.

Speed.. Lue has already stated a desire to push and run the ball. He knows his guys can beat you pushing the ball or grinding out in the half court offense.

I think Lue will continue to balance the run sets with his half court sets but with more focus on pushing the ball. Balance is important here. running the half court sets enough to keep it ingrained in the players for the playoffs is essential.

I also think that Lue believes he can dominate opponents with both Love and Irving. I think he will expand on Lebrons role as a facilitator. Lebron should buy into this as Lebron will be able to run his game. I think there is a difference between Lebron "deferring" to his teammates and attacking with them. we seen spurts of Lebron doing just that.

The East will be better next season. Cavs will need to play better but I think Lue will give them enough challenges where the Cavs are focused on getting to the playoffs as opposed to just going through the motions and waiting for the playoffs.

I am only 2 hours away from Mexico, MO if I knew they were going to have a celebration for him, I would have found a way to have gone :(

Great Interview during the Summer League with Matt Winer and former NBA Player Steve Smith(who apparently is Kay Felders cousin). It starts out pretty basic but towards the middle and end there are some great bits about the way the Cavs changed their defense in each series, the impact of role players like Jefferson/Fry/Dahntay Jones, and a great quote about Birdman.

Shown pictures of the on court game 7 celebration
A lot of emotion. Happy for team, org, players, city.
Are you feeling rested now?
I'm still not rested. Championship, parade, draft, 4th of July festivities in Mexico, MO
How did the team have the confidence to come back down 3-1?:
We never lost confidence. It never wavered being down 3-1. Knew if they could win game 5 they'd never lose Game 6
What he's looking for specifically in Summer League(mainly for Felder/McCrae)?
Have a defensive mindset. Push the ball, spread the floor, pick n rolls.
On Phil Handy delivering dressing down the team after game 2
He's always been vocal. Tells guys the truth. All of my coaches - if you see something, you have the opportunity to address it.
What his advice Lue would give to Felder as how to run a team as a rookie?
Pick up your man full court, energy all 94 feet. Wants him to be him, be aggressive, push the ball, and look to score when you have an opportunity
What did you learn from atypical 6month experience going from assistant to head coach to champion?
Instead of making suggestions, you have to make decisions. We have a great staff and very cerebral players, so you have to learn to filter through all the information and suggestions and decide what you want to do.

Steve Smith talks about T Lue being a guy he and other players looked at during playing days and said that guys will make a great coach.

What would you next for you and the staff/whats the area you want team to improve on?
Offensively continue to get better. Hard to work on things mid season with lack of practice time. Looking forward to training camp to have more time to implement and work on offense.
Defensively, the things we did in the playoffs in each individual series were things we did not do in the regular season
Against Detroit: We blitzed the Pick and roll
Against ATL: We went under on the pick and roll
Against TOR: Went under and blitzed them
Against GS: We switched 1 through 4 and then blitzed them. We also switched 1 through 5.
In regular season: we iced a lot of things and went over the top on a lot of things
Credited players for practicing all sorts of defensive sets during the regular season that they didn't use but still were prepared and executed them when rolled out in the playoffs
On McCrae:
Loves his demeanor, works out with Phil Handy every day, can score the basketball, plays with poise and his own pace and does great job at getting to the FT line. Trying to play him a little at PG to see if he can handle it for spot minutes.
Do Cavs want to continue to get in better shape and play at high pace again next season?
Yes. Want to continue to play faster. Media asked: why do you want to play fast against GS? Thats our game and we're not going to shy away from that. Once we got our pace back in Game 3 on, we felt good.
About Bron/Olympics
If Bron wanted to play it would have been ok because basketball players work on and play year round. Said LeBron is already working out now.
About Jefferson/Dahnty/Role Players
RJ was great all year. Was able to play small with him with RJ or LeBron at the 4. Hasn't lost a lot of athleticism, can still get to the rim and finish or dunk. greta in the locker room with telling the truth. Getting on LeBron, Love, Shumpert, Love. The guys respected his work and experience. Frye was a great addition to the locker room as well, RJs best friend. Dahntay: always ready, stays on guys in practice.
Asks about addition of Dunleavy:
Means a lot to add him. Guy who can run plays, move, come off of screens and make shots or make the right plays. Hard to defend guys one on one in this league(polite way of saying he's old and not ultra athletic) but that he is a great team defender, always in the right spot, you can trust him on the floor.
About Birdman:
Still athletic. Still can play defensively on the pick and roll. "And also with him, he's not afraid to hit someone, we need someone who's gonna hit someone and Birdman is the perfect guy for that"
HAHA. Those were his exact words

Talks about his yearly fourth of July weekend that he holds in Mexico, MO for the whole community w/ fireworks, parade, etc. Got a key to the city, took the trophy and did autographs and pictures for three and a half hours.

That's about it. Worth a listen to hear better context than my shorthand conveys. Ty Lue is such a good dude. So down to Earth but confident in who he is and what he's here to do.

I think the cavs have a lot of untapped potential defensively. We saw it in the playoffs a bit but with a training camp we can introduce a few things that we can go to during the regular season

Why would we do that? I think the point of the answer tot he Interview question was that regardless of what we see on defense during the regular season. a more aggressive attacking defense will be saved for practices and the playoffs.

It seems pretty Clear Lue's plan for next season is to work on different offense set against the various types of defense this season while playing a vanilla base defense.

That Lue interview is available on Cavs.Com:

I agree that the most interesting part was how the players were complaining about working on various defensive things during the season that they didn't end up using until the playoffs.

It will be interesting to see what Lue inserts with a training camp. He's often said he couldn't do as much as he wanted without that practice time.

Quick question. Does Lue's advice to Kay Felder remind you of his advice to Kyrie? Is the ideal pg for Lue a score first point guard? if scoring first (aggressive) point guards are the base of a lue offense, i could see McRae being a 1 in a Lue system, despite the fact that McRae is not a pass first player.

I was wondering the exact same thing. The advice Lue gave to Kyrie and Felder were identical.

Maybe it's just because we have lebron to act as point forward, but maybe kay fits better in ty lues ideal offense than delly did Which seems odd, but he's the coach for a reason.

I think Lue wants his point guards to attack. If a point guard goes up to the perimeter and stops for the offense to set. the defense sets. where as if the point guard attacks the defense has to react creating mismatches.

The issue albeit a minor one the Cavs have is When you have a finisher of Irvings Quality the guys pick up bad habits and don't follow through on plays which can impact a Guy like Delly who might be forced to finish a drive cause no one runs the outlet.

Did you guys see that Damon Jones was promoted to be a bench coach next year?

Mcrae is a point guard.
His only NBA start he played point for almost the entire game against Detroit.
at 6'6 he can lineup either position.
