Week 1: Bengals @ Browns

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Joe Burrow was “seeing ghosts” out there. Too many passes going nowhere because of the pressure (real or manufactured).
According to ESPN Stats & Info:

Cleveland's new defensive coordinator came up with a masterful game plan in his debut, blitzing Burrow on 53% of his dropbacks in the first half, the highest rate of his career.

I love it. Mix it up. Keep the opposing offense guessing and uncomfortable.

On blitzing:
  1. Wu is an excellent blitzer. Not only is he quick and fast, but he is one of the best linebackers in football at avoiding offensive linemen. He just sort of ducks underneath them and slides on by. It's fun to watch and it helped Wu get home once today.
  2. Delpit is also an excellent blitzer
  3. I feel like the current NFL meta has QBs reading the Mike and/or the box safeties to identify coverage. For example, you see the Mike drop back you know it's cover 2. You can throw to the boundaries without even looking because you know exactly what that means. Well... I want to see some corner blitzes. Let these speedy guys get home coming off the edge when nobody expects it and the QBs eyes aren't even looking your way
  4. Schwartz trusted his guys to man up against Chase and Higgins. The only more dynamic duos in the league are Miami and Philly. I'm excited to see how we dominate the AFC North.

I can't stress enough that I like our linebackers, but they needed talent in front of them in the front four. I thought that was the plan, then Browns fans were cock-blocked by an embarrassment of defensive linemen aside from Myles last season.

So credit goes to Schwartz for refusing to work here unless that gets fixed. I also credit Schwartz with a masterclass in defensive pressure packages today. Give me that all season, every season.

And that one Wu run blitz on a crucial third and one was like perky bouncy titties for my eyeballs.

We also had two rookies inactive on the d line that showed some promise in the pre season. This is fun let’s stay healthy and have a hell of ride boys!! I want that playoff taste from two years ago back !

Here are some offensive stats:

I'd love to see the play again. It looked pretty clear at the time and on replay.

I still think that's an under thrown ball given the separation Goodwin had and how quickly his man closed to make a play on the ball without even jumping.

That ball had some air on it so I could see rain/wind being a factor though.

It's 100% an underthrown ball.

It's also a late ball.

But the person you're responding to is also correct--Goodwin fucked up. He stopped too short and let the ball go over his head. Just poor ball tracking.

Rain and wind also maks it hard to judge for the receiver. So many reasons down field throws were tough, and other cities that got our weather and had games also had a tough time offensively. Every year there is 2 or3 or even 4 games like this.

But we played steller defense, Watson used his legs and timely underneath throws along with Chubbs legs to win the game decively.

Sometimes you win and you win ugly, this is one of those times for sure.

I finally got to watch it again and yes it was underthrown. It was also late but that's because it came off kind of a trick play where the ball was snapped to the RB, handed to Watson who then circled around and dropped back for the throw. So all that took longer to develop than a normal straight drop-back. And it was catchable, Goodwin did misjudge the flight of the ball by a bit so he did have to jump and it did go through his hands.

Considering Goodwin's health issues I have to think they didn't rep this very many times. So I think it's reasonable to chalk it all up to unfamiliarity.

But yeah, Watson's accuracy was very inconsistent. Underthrown deep balls and worm burners over the middle.

I have every expectation that he's going to work the kinks out of his accuracy problems. We all know it's something he once had. Coming back from the 2 years off it's taking him way longer than I anticipated, and it looks like his accuracy and timing are some of the hardest things to get back.

I’m going to chime in and remind everyone that the consensus top 3-4 QB, Joe Burrow, was way worse than Watson Sunday with 82 yards passing, while having the superior WR group. Yes, a big part of that was the browns pressure and secondary, but it also speaks to the conditions overall.

The conditions were similar all over the Eastern US and that affected many games, including Eagles - Patriots. Jalen Hurts was much worse than Watson but it's hard to play well in heavy rain.
