Welcome Derrick Williams

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Wasted opportunity with this guy. Still not clear to me why he got glued to the bench, he wasn't a world beater but he had athleticism and size which we needed badly, especially against the Warriors.

Our best stretch of basketball is when he was playing and we switched everything because he could handle PG through PF, and he took the defensive load off LBJ.

Did any of the media ask the FO why Williams wasn't used as much? I only see solid discussion on fan boards.

Williams was never going to be played over RJ or Shumpert. He was there to help as a stopgap during our injury stretch in the regular season, and if he stays around next year then I think he'll get the opportunity to take over RJ's role and prove himself.

But, maybe he's just looking for his next paycheck. It's hard to tell at this point. He'd be a good backup SF if he was given a full season to develop with LBJ and whatever PG we bring in to backup Kyrie. I think it would be a good career move for him, but who knows. He'll probably follow the money.

I also think it was a wasted opportunity.
He did play in the blowout games but not in the flow of any finals game.
I don't think it was anything to do with attitude but to me he didn't have to be over anyone except Frye.
The Cavs needed someone younger on the wing to line up against their wing players.

RJ will probably retire. So if Williams stays he could receive pretty good back up minutes. I think we should give him a shot and see if he can develope under Lebrons tutelage. I think he has high level talent, just gotta get it outa him.

I don't understand the infatuation with Williams...he doesn't shoot well ...doesn't finish around the rim well other than an open dunk and plays alright defense...There's a reason he hasn't exceled in the league...he's not that good

He shot over 40% from 3 for the cavs. He has athleticism most players only dream of. He was part of the best lineup the cavs ran this year.

I don't think the decision of Derrick Williams is on the Cavs to accept him back. I think Lue and the front office will have to convince him he has a role going forward on this team. The Knicks wanted him back and will most likely try to resign him. They probably will offer more money. The decision will be if the Cavs can offer him the role he desires with enough compensation. We have the advantage of winning and playing with LBJ and Kyrie.

If the Cavs had a role for derrick and then kiboshed that role.. perhaps they don't want him back at all?

This could definitely be the case. I also think the opposite could be true too. If the Cavs saw him as a player for the future but wasn't currently an upgrade to Richard Jefferson. They decided that if they wanted a chance to keep him that not playing him would suppress his value enough that they would have a chance to sign him with the limited exceptions/funds we have. If he showed promise in the playoffs he would definitely get paid more than the mini-mle.

If they can get him on a multi-year contract this off season then they can have his early bird rights or bird rights in the future. (Not sure how his partial season counts toward bird rights). It would be a smart move to get a good player with potential that we wouldn't usually have a chance at in the open market.

Yea he got literally no playoff and finals experience... Hard to suggest he'll be apart of the future finals going forward

If he did get finals and playoff experience while playing decently, what do you think he would have been worth in free agency?

He got 5.5 million last year from the heat. If he is offered more than that this year it will be more than the mini-mle and out of our price range. Better he played and more minutes would have only driven up his value, making him more likely a rental than a long term piece.

Hey Lebron. Derrick is looking really good .... so uh instead of having him help us win this year . we gonna put him on the backburner and screw him out of money so he can stay with our team....

now really what do you think LeBron is gonna say about that.

I literally just realized he isn't still on the roster lol.
