Welcome to Cleveland, Jerome Ford - RB - Cincinnati

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
My thoughts:

Strong runner who never gets hit right on the nose. He has that Kareem Hunt-esqe ability to slither away from defenders and just stumble forward. The biggest problem, as I see it, is that he doesn’t have great vision. Maybe at an NFL level, when he has better run blocking, he’ll improve.

I think he’ll be a pretty good 3rd down back, but he’s never going to be the guy who can run consistently between the tackles.

NFL Scout takes on Ford:
8. JEROME FORD, Cincinnati (5-10 ½, 211, 4.49, 3-4): Carried 31 times in 2018-’19 at Alabama before shuffling to Cincinnati. “He sat behind a guy (Gerrid Doaks) that wasn’t as good as him (in 2020) and, when he got a chance, he produced,” one scout said. “He’s a fun player. He’s fast, runs hard, strong. He could play on all three downs right now. He’s not a special No. 1 but he could be a No. 1. Football character’s really good. The position gets pushed down but he’s a second-round talent.” Had a 1,319-yard season in ’21 as the Bearcats reached the CFP semifinals. Finished with 318 carries for 1,953 (6.1) and 30 TDs to go with 31 receptions. “He’s got a chance to be a home-run hitter,” another scout said. “He’s got a big-play trait with his speed.” Led the top 25 backs on the Wonderlic with a 28. “I’d take him over Zamir White,” a third scout said. “The run instincts were good but nothing special. He’s got good hands. Not a blocker. He’ll go late 3, at least early 4 with that kind of size and speed.” From Tampa.

RB20 – Jerome Ford

I’ve been lower than consensus on Jerome Ford throughout this offseason, but I’m coming around a bit. He wasn’t used much as a receiver, but he was efficient on downfield targets when he was used. And I think he’s better there than his volume numbers suggest. He’s dynamic in the open field but pretty boom/bust as a runner overall. Guys with his body type don’t often see much more than complementary roles.

Big shoes to fill at RB. Gregg Pruitt and Kevin Mack most notable, but Ben Gay, Rueben Doughns, Carlos Hyde and Crowell among others wore that number.
Are you ignoring Chris Jennings on purpose? His touchdown on TNF against the Steelers in 2009 will forever live in the hearts of Browns fans.

I keep going back to this tweet, especially after hearing the Browns FO talk about Ford:

The one word Browns personnel consistently described Ford with was explosive.. That is an element they don't really have in the backfield, and the main reason why they likely went with Ford...

In watching some tape on Ford, the noticeable element to his game is how much yard after contact he's able to gain... He's never stopped by the first hit or hand, and produces some good yardage just like Hunt and Chubb do..

So top left square outlier would be worst? Bottom right square outlier would be best? Ford actually performing better than he should be with poor run blocking? Am I reading that right?

Not surprising at all. He’s been quite bad since taking over.

I’d actually be pretty interested in a 7th rounder for Dernest back because he has actual vision
