Of all games to make this new server busy it was tonight against the Pistons...

Everybody thought we won the championship tonight:D

It's not just tonight for me. It's EVERY single game we play even after the server change. I cannot get into this place after the games. It starts sometime in the 4th quarter when I get the dreaded message:

"Server is too busy at this time. Try again later."

BTW: Getting that message within the vbulletin interface means it's not an actual server problem at all. It means that the vbulletin software is being limited to a certain number of simultaneous connections. When it reaches that number it will give you that message. If it was a server issue; we would never be able to get to the site at all.

I'm not sure why these forums are being limited unless Glen has to pay for bandwidth used to his hosting company. You can go into the control panel of vbulletin and set the connections issue to unlimited number of connections and you will never be shut out of this place.

I did get a server is too busy msg yesterday during the day.....with nothing significant going on. It lasted for like 5 minutes.

Tonight is the first time I've seen it since the new server, I'm pretty sure.

Thanks for the report, we will look into this and find a solution.

Gentlemen, as an IS/IT consultant I can tell you with certainty: this site is not cheap to run. First off, as nifty as vBulletin is, it's as resource-heavy as it is robust and easy to administer. To that end, there may be hundreds of people online (not just members) at any given moment, perhaps over 1000+. To support that level of service, it definitely requires a major connection, as well as a server.

Hell, the server machine that Ben says they purchased is less equipped than my home server, a dual X5492 w/16gb ram. I paid thousands of dollars for this computer (which I built myself to save $$$) to push virtual machines, locally as well as remote.

Buying a dual LGA 771 machine of that caliber while simultaneously affording a connection to serve thousands of people a day, is far more expensive than many people here seem to realize. Give the admins slack. I've had no problems since the new server, and the only time I can remember ever having problems is during the trade deadline. We're not watching/streaming games from RCF - it's a message board. We'll get by.

My advice to Glen is to go with what works. This works.

Purchased? Really? I'd simply do a co-located server/hosted thing with a major host and let them administer the damn thing. Far cheaper that way and you get a better server. You just lease it and pay for the administration per month.

As far as vbulletin; when I said "connections", that not just humans but ALL connections. This site pulls in images all the time from other places. It allows avatars, smilies, and ALL else. Each time an image is pulled from elsewhere, that's a connection. The VB software itself can limit the numbers of connections by simply telling it to do so. That's why I stated that Glen might have to pay for any added bandwidth that is used so he's limiting the connections. I'm simply saying that it's NOT a server issue at all. Most servers can handle a good deal of bandwidth at all times. Some hosts charge if a site/server goes over a certain amount of bandwidth. A key benefit of vBulletin is the fact you can limit the connections yourself inside of the software.

I'm not jumping on anyone at all. Simply stating some facts as I know them... or think I know them. :D

This is a great place; otherwise, I wouldn't really care about being shut out during games. But it's happening every game for me.

Hook a brother up! My overclocked i5 750 just isn't cutting the mustard these days. A couple X5492s sounds great. :D

Yea, that's my understanding; they purchased their own dedicated machine during the whole Amare II thread. That is, AFAIK.

Indeed, but the costs associated with such a connection (one that has a decent uptime at least) can be fairly expensive; especially for a site that has no direct means of revenue earning and a limited demographic/userbase to push click-thrus. When you really think about it, I doubt RCF is making Glen any real money - if any at all.

That's odd man, I haven't experienced such a problem since the trade deadline. But honestly, I don't post often in the game threads anyway. I really thought it was a good idea to use game chats rather than threads to save bandwidth. Most of the messages in the threads are forgettable anyway like "Whoah, did you guys just see that?" There's no logical reason such a message should be persistent on the server. A chat server could easily fulfill the need for the more comment-like posts, reserving game threads for actual discussion of the game.

Its not a bandwidth issue. It was a server resource issue. Every post, search, refresh, PM, quick reply, thanks, new member, logging in and people who just mash on buttons taxes the server and drives up the load (not to mention the forum software updating in the background). I had certain fail safes in place to make sure we didn't crash during the trade deadline.

I've eased those fail safes a bit while tweaking when the forum software updates thread views, counts etc... and we should be fine.

This is the first I have heard of anyone having problems. We can't fix a problem if you don't tell us about it.

Yeah this happened to me last night, only for about a minute or so.

It was during the earlier part of Moo's show.. dont know if having that streaming on the forum puts a tax on the resources too.
