This is the first thread i have started ever on RCF and if people think this idea is ridiculous, feel free to lock it down.

I was looking through some of hollinger's reports on players in the NBA and I saw this scouting report on Elson

A lanky 7-footer who can run the floor and hit an open 15-footer, Elson makes a contribution at the defensive end because he can guard the pick-and-roll and will give up his body, and despite his thin frame he's a decent rebounder. His build gives him some trouble in post defense and is an equal liability at the offensive end since he can't get deep position on the blocks.

Though he can hit from 15, Elson is a limited offensive player with few other skills. He's not a good ball handler and tends to throw away high-post entry passes, and he has trouble finishing at the basket if he's not running the floor for a dunk.

Salary: $1,700,000

So here are my questions:

Do we want him?

In considering this question, I know that he is old (33) and that would make us older which we don't want to do. But, and this is a big but, he is a tall guy that can defend a pick and roll and can shoot a midrange jumper pretty consistently. In just under 17 minutes per game, he averages 3.4 points and almost 4 rebounds. Coming off a bench line up or letting him play PF with Shaq on the floor sometimes might be helpful. The fact that he can defend the pick-and-roll also makes me think he might work really well with Shaq on the floor due to Shaq's deficiency in this area.

He won't be able to do what Andy can do in the post, which is a reason why he might be good at being a back-up PF or a 3rd center. lots of things to consider.

Who could we trade for him?

Is it realistic?

So there we go... I know a lot of people have put up a lot of ideas where some had traction and some less so. I just wanted to see if anyone thought this idea might be okay?

Wow, I guess there is a mix for every player lol

I hope someone gets paid to make these ridiculous mixes. I would be sad to learn it's some loser in his mom's basement slicing up Eric Piakowski mixes because he feels the worlds needs that.

As far as your question my answer would be 'eh'

If you're looking for Elson to compete for a spot in the roation your team should be named the Milwaukee Bucks or New Jersey Nets. If you're looking for an above average 15th man, he's your guy.

As a Dutchmen (Elson is Dutch) I would be stunned of Elson would come to play for the Cavs. Stunned like: WDF is Danny Ferry thinking? Tho I would buy a new Cavs Jersey instantly! :king:

Elson is the best Dutch basketballplayer since Rick Smit, but he just isnt good enough for a title contender like the Cavs. He actually played "good" here in the Netherlands against Germany and Israel this week, but when I see him play you realise we dont deliver players good enough for the NBA. Maybe Henk Norel, who got drafted in this years draft, in a few years. Until then us Dutch can only be proud on Rick Smit, not on Fransico Elson, who did make it in the NBA.

Joe Smith would obviously be signed before going after Elson.

Is your national pride getting in the way of the fact that the Dunking Dutchman's last name is Smits, not Smit? :chuckles:

You got me there!
You pronounce it "Smit" in Dutch, that caused the error.

Anytime someone brings up an older big for depth's sake, I ask myself "is this someone that would provide something new to the mix, or would he simply be stealing minutes from our younger guys?" For instance, Joe Smith scores at practically the same rate as JJ Hickson (0.34 points per minute to Hickson's 0.35), yet provides better outside shooting, a better feel for the game, and simply more experience (26,361 minutes played over his career).

By contrast, Elson, despite being 33 years old, has played almost 20,000 fewer minutes (6,515 minutes played over his career). You're also looking at a guy who scored only 3.4 points per game while logging 16.6 minutes per game last season (0.20 points per minute). On the other hand, JJ Hickson scored 4.0 points per game last season in his rookie campaign while logging fewer minutes, 11.4 per game (JJ averaged 12.5 points per 36 minutes while Elson averaged 7.4 points per 36 minutes, and they both averaged 8.4 rebounds per 36 min).

Lastly, Elson is more of a center than a power forward, which is what we actually need. Last season he logged 23% of Milwaukee's center minutes, and logged 0% of the Bucks power forward minutes. With Shaq, Z, and even Andy who is center eligible, a solid power forward with a good midrange game is a far bigger need. Simply put, Elson would steal developmental minutes from JJ Hickson and be less productive while doing so.

Thanks Camakazee and everyone else. I remember watching him play for the Spurs and thought he was pretty good but he doesn't bring in enough of a unique quality to justify taking JJ minutes and paying more money to another 30+ year old dude. Thanks everybody. Although the idea doesn't have much traction, I am at least relieved that my first thread survived long enough to get me some solid feedback about my idea.

I never understand why people use two word responses, the phrase "FAIL!," or facepalm gifs in reaction to player possibility threads. Aside from players like Stephon Marbury (deserving of any of the above reactions), posters could at least take the time out to throw in some views or statistics that support their reasons for wanting or not wanting to sign a certain player. Aside from being respectful, it actually adds to the discussion.

I was actually a fan of Elson's too in San Antonio and would've welcomed him as a backup center on our team at the time. But now, with a log jam at that position (a good problem to have), and young talent at the forward position, I just can't see him helping our current situation.

Dan Gadzuric anyone? :chuckles:
