There has been a lot of discussion about this. I thought i would make a thread.

I would have to say i would want stromile swift. From what ive heard he can play defense, hes a good working, and can put on a show.

I chose Stro - I am just sold on him right now (may change in time). The other guys are too offensive oriented for my taste. SAR would be up there at 2nd probably - although he's a rich man's Gooden. Evans is too one-dimensional to be considered at the top of this list. Gooden should be right up there near the top...he has some potential,,,I just don't see the fit on this team. Run this same poll for the Bobcats or something, and he may be on top.

Donyell Marshall.
His outside shooting will open things up in the paint and make life much easier for Z and for the slashers going to the basket. Defensively he would be an improvement as well. If we get Marshall and Saras teams would really have to pick their poison. They'd be really screwed when they double team Z or Lebron....they'd also be screwed if they don't.LOL

Of that group I chose Shareef. I think he's the most talented and versatile of those named but would also have the ability to fit into a team concept. He's also fairly affordable for a player of his talent.
To be honest none of those PF's are a perfect fit but Shareef can score both inside and out and is a solid rebounder. He's only average at best defensively but none of the possible PF's are great defenders. Although many feel we don't need a PF who can score, I think the Cavs do need a PF who can knock down open shots and is somewhat of a threat to score. Right now the Cavs still are a fairly weak perimeter shooting team and with Z, LeBron and Hughes whoever is at PF will be getting a ton of open looks all season and they need to have a decent mid range game.

I wouldn't want Swift. I think he's overrated. He has the same questionable basketball IQ problems as Gooden and isn't known as the hardest worker around. He's an average rebounder, doesn't have much range offensively and is a mediocre defensive player.

All that being said, the Cavs might end up better off just sticking with Gooden and Varejao for now if no better affordable options come around or no possible Gooden trade really makes sense.

donyell mashall
shareef
reggie evans

Before, I would have said Evans because his hard working style of play would fit well next to Z and the rest of the starting lineup.

But now im in favor of just keeping our current PF duo of Drew and AV. I would like to see what these two could do next season under Brown. I no longer see the need to try to move Drew for a higher priced guy before Drew has gotten a chance to settle down in one place and feel comfortable. I think some of us are getting too rushed into this "replace Drew with an enforcer" talk. Most of the guys we're talking about as a replacement for him arent nearly as talented or skilled. We may let Drew go and overpay a guy like Evans because hes a better fit and end up regretting it in the long run. I say let Drew stay here until his contract is up next season and decide what to do with him then.

Id also like to see AV become starter eventually. AV may be the hard working, defending, rebounding PF that we've been looking for all along. Drew can come off the bench, possibly seeing more minutes than AV, and become one of the top sixth men in the league. If Drew can accept that role he could be an instant scoring and rebounding puch off the bench. Snow-Luke-Ira/Sasha-Drew-Dale Davis?. That looks like a pretty strong bench.

I think King has it nailed. A combo of Gooden and Varejao, in addition to being cheap, will shoot well (50%+), rebound well (12-14 a night), play ok defense, and be team players. Stro is a poor man's Gooden who hasn't shown it in four years; Walker is a bad fit in a number of ways; Evans is a beast on the boards, but he's foul prone, can't shoot a lick, and a so-so defender; SAR is weak defensively and will be too expensive; Donyell Marshall, who isn't listed, is probably the best of the bunch because he can shoot the three, is a pretty good defender, and can board as well as Gooden. But he's going to be relatively expensive, like SAR. We need to get a shooting guard and a back-up center more than we need a new power forward.

I want Marshall Stro Evans SAR Walker in that order.

In terms of talent SAR is the cream of the crop. He's been forgotten in Portland playing out of position but this guy is a legitimate 20/10 threat and has put up much better numbers on a consistent basis then any of the other guys including Gooden. He's also a model citizen and isn't a basketball dunce like Gooden or Swift. He's not a shotblocker but is a decent defender and an underrated part of defense is making you're opponent work on guarding you

I like Donyell Marshall. I think the comBination of AV and Marshall will give our coach numerous options. That combo at PF and PG. Playing Marshall and Snow together and then Varajao with either Stoudamire or Sarunas. Keeps a good balance of offense and defense at all times.

I chose Gooden reluctantly till I can come up with a better option. Marshall is an option I am considering, but not at the expense of signing Sarunas.

Drew Gooden : My pick. I would like a better fit, but until that arrives he stays and starts.

Anderson Varejao : Why destroy his strenghths by changing his aggressive in your face style by starting him? His game is perfect coming off the bench till his game develops enough.

Antoine Walker : Needs the ball to be effective. Thats not a fit.

Reggie Evans : Good fit, but he is a restricted free agent. You dont overpay very limited players.

Stromile Swift : Potentially a good fit, but the same can be said of Drew Gooden. But like Drew, this is unlikely to eventuate, as he is not a smart player.

Shareef Abdur Rahim : Good choice if we missed out on a 2 guard. Defensively poor so not a good fit.

Anderson is my pick if it's not drew. Donyell marshall would be my pick, but I have a feeling he's going to a contender, we're not at that stage yet.

Anyways, my reasons for starting anderson are pretty simple. Let's get this boy developed! He's the future of the power forward position here in cleveland. I think most everyone realizes that.

to answer karma's question:

Why destroy his strenghths by changing his aggressive in your face style by starting him?

Starting Anderson is by no means changing Andersons style of play. The reason I would start anderson is because of his style of play. The cavs need a defensive power forward who hustles and makes everyone better. Anderson does this. He's young, and mistake prone, which is why you start him. you let him work through his mistakes now, so later down the line he'll be ready come play off time. Keeping anderson on the bench and unleashing him on bench scrubs is by no means improving andersons game. He needs to go up against players better than him. He needs to face starters. That's how you learn, and get better.

Anderson has shown he can stick an open jumper as well. While he has the funkiest, flatest shot, it is effective. His game is raw, playing time will improve this, and he needs to get that playing time going up against the best players, not the second tiers.

Anderson had the second highest plus minus ratio on our team, only second to lebron. The boy can play. Even higher than Z, and Z didnt spend his time on a mediocre second unit.

Anderson by no means has to play 30-35 minutes a night either, so foul trouble won't be a problem. Unless of course he proves he deserves that much pt.

I understand your views but team wise his boost he gives the team is a great lift off the bench. We need some energy from the bench at both ends of th floor which he provides. I can just see him picking up a cheap foul in the 1st minute or two then goes into his shell making him next to useless. He will get his minutes, but to me, lets not push him too much.

I don't want Varejao starting yet. I was just giving the arguement for that side. :chuckles: But, I do want him starting if our options at power forward include reggie evans and stromile swift. If Gooden won't be starting,I don't see many a power forward who are as good a fit as varejao in free agency, nor will come cheaply as to ensure we get saras.
