Still so strange to me how well he is playing at the center position, although I believe that is where he was most productive with us as well.
I think part of the reason why JJ does so well at center is because it forces him to be physical and pay attention to the basket. He gets a lot of rebounds & putbacks if you keep him with one foot in the paint at all times. It also forces JJ to be more of a strong side defender than a weak side defender. He's a bad strong side defender because he gives up too much size against centers, but he's an even worse weak side defender. No awareness. When JJ plays forward, he drifts to the outside and gets disengaged on both sides of the floor.
When Speights was drafted #16 in 2008, I was happy because I thought it would help the Cavs avoid the temptation to take him. Instead they drafted a very similar guy in Hickson. Today I think Speights has a better chance of "getting it" some day because he just seems like a brighter guy who can see X's and O's and understands what coaches want, even if he doesn't always do it. He just lacks interest sometimes, he doesn't lack awareness.
Blair will probably get a "role player" deal from a team that needs rebounding. $3Mil tops.
If Speights opts out, I think his future with the Cavs is going to come down to the draft. If the Cavs draft big & sign Oden, then the only why the Cavs sign him would be as part of a S&T. I don't know what part the Cavs will play in Speights future until after the draft. That makes it tough to figure out how much he gets.
For the same reason that Drew Gooden got an MLE deal to play center, I think there's a pretty good chance that JJ gets an MLE deal this summer. There are teams still bite on hollow stats. That's why I think JJ gets the most and some team gets buyer's remorse.
