Hicksons advanced metrics are just awfull. No GM who wants their job should pay him big money. Speights is consistent and plays some defense
So your saying Minnesota will give him a max contract? Kaaaahhhnnnn...

Nobody here cares about his empty stats

JJ had 22 points and 11 rebounds against Howard. Howard is the nost highly rated center in the NBA. So how were these empty stats? So name all the centers better than Howard if these are empty stats.

I guess empty stats is like a person being a legend in his own mind.

They're empty stats because, while his 22 points and 11 rebounds look good, the 19 points, 16 rebounds by Dwight, the 3 turnovers he committed, and the loss his team got don't look so great.

How about his other two games vs Howard this season? Where JJ put up 13 points and 10 rebounds, followed by 2 points and 8 boards. Mr Hickson allowed Howard to score 33 points and 14 rebounds, followed by 21 points and 14 boards. There is a reason that everyone keeps talking about being objective when you look at his stats. He doesn't play the other end of the court.

Scoring at a very efficient .610 TS% is not "empty." Playing within yourself and the offense and being able to find and finish shots close to the rim is very valuable. Still, I doubt it makes up for the real issue with Hickson which is being completely lost on defensive rotations.

They're empty because while they look nice, he really doesn't contribute to winning.

His apparently good rebounding numbers are an anomaly because Portland rebounds significantly better with him off the floor.

His lack of defense can't be stated enough either.

I'm also not really sure what you're saying with your bolded statement.

A guy that happens to be pretty close to Speights told me that from the way he has been talking, he would seem to think the chances that Speights signs on for the last year of his contract here as being very good.

I wonder if Speights thinks he can get a better payday if he contributes to getting a young team to the playoffs, or if he just really wants to play for the Cavs. Either way, it does seem like waiting could be a good idea because GM's seem to be very wary of taking on salary this year. Maybe they will be conservative giving out contracts too.

Personally, I would like to see him for another year and see if he can grow. It has been pointed out that while he has the size and strength to play center, he is probably the worst help defender on the team. If he could improve that, and develop his post game some, I'd like to keep him.

He doesn't have to decide until after the draft, correct? I would imagine if the cavs draft Len or Noel it would influence his decision.

Well if he waits until after the draft it will unfortunately be tougher to trade him. I would be surprised if he didn't pick up his option. I'm not a fan. His athleticism has been underwhelming. Yeah he's big and strong but he doesn't play like it. It's the same point MYoung made about Zeller.

I repeat. You don't find toughness or physicality in the weight room

However even as someone who strongly dislikes Zeller, I think he has way more potential as a good backup than Speights. The only thing Speights does better is rebound. Tyler will get better offensively, and I pray he'll get better as a rebounder. No worries if Speights picks up his option though, I doubt the Cavs will pay him by the time he becomes a UFA.

I wonder if things will change if the Cavs draft a PF or C high in the first round.

Ahh Portland has a better record than Cleveland. In addition Cleveland won without Irving yesterday. Minn also has better or same or record. So I guess Irving and Loves stats are more empty or as empty J'J's. In addition Irving and Love are not exactly a lock down defenders.
Great logic!

Just no... Your argument here doesn't hold water.

It's been rehashed multiple times about how/why Hickson doesn't contribute towards winning basketball games. Check out the "Decline of JJ Hickson" thread in Around the NBA.

Here's a good quote from Max in there:

He had played 19 games for Portland who had claimed him off of waivers...after he got cut!! JJ didn't have much leverage or any better offers than Portland's this summer. He was going to ask us for a big deal. I know this for a fact.

I posted this a month ago in another JJ thread...please look at the bolded part ----

JJ reminds me a lot of Drew. He has occasional stretches where he stuffs stats, but he never makes the team better. His on/off net numbers are always horrible whether he's on a first place team or last place team...GM's know this. Nice to see him stuffing stats again...amazing what being broke and unemployed will do for a guy's motivation.

HICKSON ON/OFF NET
08/09 -19.4 (66 win team)
09/10 -8.6 (HE STARTED 73 GAMES on a 61 WIN 1ST PLACE TEAM)
10/11 -5.5
11/12 -7.3
12/13 -11.8

From JJ's rookie year until yesterday, he is 734th out of 743 players in net +/-...his teams were -801 when he was on the floor.

JJ was living the dream while he was here. He was young, athletically gifted and was getting carried on the Lebron ride to 60 win seasons. He knew that other teams wanted him, he knew we had aging players, he thought he was the future and HE WANTED MAX MONEY.

"The Decision" - BOOOOOM!!!!

Ok, after the decision mgmt had to pick up the pieces and see what they had and how players would react. There were some players that were true professionals, that had a "screw Lebron" attitude, worked hard and tried to make the best of the situation(Andy, Boobie, Parker). There were other players that were like jilted girlfriends, crying in their ice cream after being dumped (Mo and JJ). The Cavs had to purge themselves of the ones that couldn't get over the decision and were feeling sorry for themselves. Mo was a no-brainer. JJ took a little more thought because we had invested a lot in him and he was young. In the end he got lazy, his attitude sucked and he thought we needed him more than he needed us...he was wrong.

Keep in mind the trade was hours before what everyone knew was going to be a long lockout. During the lockout JJ got fat, JJ was broke, JJ signed overseas and got cut before his first game. I think everyone knew that would happen so we took what we could get in a dead market...no one knew what the rules would be on the backside and everyone knew JJ wanted to get paid. We also didn't want him around our rookies. As far as the restrictions go, we have two firsts coming up this summer...it would probably work out best if we got it in 2014 so we'd have 2 firsts then and 2 firsts in 2015. Sacto has some talent, just assembled horribly. One more top pick for them and some chemistry moves and they could be decent.

So you think Speights or Blair would do better? How about AV, Zeller or TT? AV must have a ton of empty stats since for years Howard eaten him alive.

I don't think you understand what empty stats are. We'll just leave it at that. And the difference between those guys you listed and JJ? JJ gets smoked by everyone, not just Dwight.
