"Last time we played them they beat us by 40," Randolph said. "So guys had a little chip on their shoulder and wanted to come out and play hard."
The game got testy a couple of times. Allen landed hard after a foul by Jamal Crawford, hitting his elbow on the base of the backboard stanchion. The players came together and there was some grabbing -- Pierce appeared to have his hand around Crawford's chin -- but no punches were thrown and there were no technicals called.
"I just wanted to protect my player," Pierce said. "I thought he got a flagrant foul, got knocked into the camera, that's all. Just wanted to protect my guy. I just hope that if I get knocked down like that, my team has to come for me and I know they will. That's how we feel about one another."
It wasn't a big deal. Ray Allen got fouled hard then Pierce and Garnett came to his rescue. No punches thrown.
I saw it happen live. I didn't think it was a big deal. It's common for players to go chest to chest when there's a flagrant. As long as things don't escalate and no punches are thrown usually there isn't a suspension.
If a punch is thrown there is an automatic suspension. If there isn't a punch or elbow thrown its subjective. There usually aren't suspensions for pushes unless its blatant like Josh Howard pushing Brad Miller in the back of his head.
Leaving the bench area during an altercation is an automatic suspension there is no subjectivity to that rule, it's black/white.
