How about instead of the rookie/sophomore game, they did a 3 on 3 tournament instead?

You could have 8 teams of three or four. That's 24-32 guys.

Each game would follow hoop-it-up rules link. Each game would be 10 or 12 minutes long.

That would be 70 or 84 minutes of total game time which could easily fit into a TV schedule.

The longest any guy could possibly play would be 30 or 36 minutes.

Eligibility could be changed so that any guy not voted into the All-Star game is eligible. This would allow guys like Jarrett Jack and Jonas Valanciunas to participate in All-Star weekend.

No guy would be compelled to participate. He could declare himself ineligible for the draft.

The teams would be drafted by TNT personalities. That alone might get decent ratings.

You guys think this would work? See any ways to make it better? See any ways it wouldn't work?

I like the rookie/sophomore game. I think they should get rid of the skills and shooting stars. Keep the dunk contest and 3 point contest, add a 2 on 2 or 3 on 3 tournament. Maybe 8 teams, up to 7. Total of 7 games that probably go 10 minutes each, which is about the length of the first half of allstar night anyway.

I think seeing NBA players in a 3 on 3 sort of street ball kind of game would be really fun and interesting but I don't think any of the players would really compete that hard for fear of getting an injury so it would probably just end up being incredibly sloppy and half-hearted. I mean, that could still be fun, but not as cool as I wished it would be.

It would be an awesome forum for guys like Jamal Crawford, Kyrie, and other amazing ball handlers to really do some and1 crazy dribble shit that they can't do in a real game. I think it would be pretty entertaining.

I think knockout would be more enjoyable than 3 on 3. You like actually have to play defense in 3 on 3 cuz the court is so much bigger.

If knockout doesnt work, ill listen..

Do you think they compete that hard on defense the current way?

Knockout would be cooler than the skills challenge.

Thought I read about 3 on 3 at the Olympics in 2016 or something like that.

Interesting proposition. Sounds fun.

You also gave me another idea: extend All-Star weekend for a one-on-one competition. How many players do we hear in the press/media saying they could take such and such one-on-one?

One on one would be awesome, but I think it would suffer the same problem that the rookie game does. Basically, anything where a guy can get embarassed, the players dont try or dont want to participate. I mean, how much would you want to see Lebron, Durant, Westbrook, Curry, Kobe, Harden, John Wall and Chris Paul in an 8 player 1 on 1 tourney? Just I dont see them playing a whole lot of defense. Knockout is probably the highest chance of having an actual competition thats entertaining to watch.

How much do you think Jordan vs Kobe would get on Pay Per View?

in a fight? I'd pay to see them fight.

If you were going to do this, why let TNT pick the teams? I think it would be much more fun to let the players themselves put together their own teams. Let friends join up with friends, issue challenges/talk smack to other guys, etc..

I'd make it open to everyone though, not just the guys who didn't make the AS teams. Seeing the greats in the league pair up with their buddies and verbally abuse each other would be fun.
