Paul Pierce will likely miss significant time with a foot injury, according to multiple reports, although it's not yet clear what the exact nature of his ailment is. Pierce injured his foot in the first quarter of the Celtics' win on Monday over the Wizards, and although he eventually returned to action, he sat out the entire fourth quarter.

After the game, he told reporters he believed he had suffered a sprain. "I'll get some X-rays tomorrow, but I think it's not going to be too bad," he said. "I would have known by now [if it was broken]. I think I'll be all right."

Unfortunately, X-rays proved to be inconclusive, according to NBA.com's David Aldridge, who cites an unnamed league source as saying it's likely Pierce has in fact suffered a fracture. Pierce will undergo additional testing, and until the results are in, the Celtics' front office refuses to publicly speculate on the severity of the injury.

"We just don't know," Celtics GM Danny Ainge told Comcast SportsNet's Gary Tanguay. "We basically don't know the extent of the injury. The doctors don't have all the information to make the decision. We expect to make an announcement tomorrow."

While Ainge is playing things close to the vest, Pierce's teammates are not; Shelden Williams posted a mysterious message on Twitter on Tuesday afternoon that has Celtics fans fearing the worst: "Man when it rains it pours!!! Yall will find out what I mean soon!!!!" It's unclear if Williams was even referring to Pierce's situation, but it's not difficult for a panicked fan base to come to their own conclusions.

Whether Pierce's foot is broken or not, any extended time on the sidelines will jeopardize his chances of appearing in the All-Star game on Feb. 14, meaning fans of the Hawks and Knicks will be eagerly monitoring this situation in hopes that Josh Smith or David Lee will be named an injury replacement

Looking like that reverse mortgage Ainge took out will get him only one title.

According to a league source, the left foot Paul Pierce injured on Monday may be fractured.

More tests are scheduled to determine if indeed the foot is broken but one source said it "looks that way." Another source said that the injury "might be a lot less serious" than a fracture.

Besides further damaging a Celtics team already hard hit by injuries, Pierce's injury could force him to miss the All-Star Game. If so, NBA Commissioner David Stern would choose a replacement.

Can't say i'm surprised. That team is just too old to stay healthy...

I also wouldn't be surprised if every major analyst still says that they are better than us...(when healthy of course)

I hate that argument. You would think they would notice by now that the Celtics are just an old team. Stretches where they are completely healthy are few and far between...and becoming more and more scarce.

It just gets worse for Boston. We have heard about how old Boston is, but this year has really taken it to a new level. I dont see a team in the East that can take us down right now. Its a long ways away but its hard not to be confident with the way things are shaping up.

I'd wager that Josh Smith would get some serious consideration since Pierce is a Forward.

They're saying "day-to-day" for Pierce.

Delonte is also listed as "day-to-day".

Take it for what it's worth. I think he'll be out for at least 2 weeks, IMHO, but we'll have to wait and see what the new x-rays have to show.

If it's a fracture, I'd imagine at least a month of downtime. If it is a sprain, depending on the grade, I'd probably imagine 1-3 weeks. Only time will tell, though.

Well as i always say I never wish injuries on a player. But Pierce and KG are the exceptions. I hate Pierce since his wheel chair experiment, and I just don't like KG what so ever. But this is not good. I want to beat the Celtics at 100% to prove to the talking heads and the nay sayers that the Cavs are the best team in the NBA.

I'm not a doctor or anything, but wouldn't an X-ray show a fracture?
