Think something just changed with the storyline and Balor recently for that to happen?

I'd say there are three possibilities.

1. They wanted Balor to leave NXT looking strong, and so they had him drop the title on an untelevised house show rather than a high-profile PPV like Takeover Dallas.

2. Balor got hurt and they called an audible mid-match.

3. They weren't originally planning to call him up as of Takeover, but recently changed their minds.

The fact that I got an instant update on my phone from the WWE app and the fact that the story went up almost immediately on WWE.com at 10:30pm on a Thursday makes me think this was planned and thus not an actual injury. If he wasn't planned to win the title, the story probably wouldn't have been published on the WWE's website until tomorrow.

It's also probable that NXT wanted Balor to break Neville's record for holding the title the longest, which may have played a part in him not dropping it at Takeover.

Well, if he attacks AJ and costs him the match against Reigns, that's going to make him an instant heel.

I honestly think Zayn needs to lose the feud simply because he's the prototypical underdog. If he wins the feud that's kind of undermined. I think he should struggle to win big matches for a while his first year, which will make it all the more gratifying when he eventually does win a major title.

Balor vs Styles sounds amazing. That would explain AJ not knowing what's going on with Anderson & Gallows. I just don't like Balor as a heel. Tis a shame they're aren't becoming one big faction that won some gold.

First off, if WWE is smart (they're not), they'd make the main event of Payback no DQ. That would instantly make things more interesting, as suddenly a Bullet Club run-in doesn't immediately end the match.

Then you have Gallows and Anderson come out during the main event to attack Reigns and lay him out first. They give him their finisher while AJ gets up (presumably they'd come out when AJ was in trouble) looking shocked, but his shock slowly morphs into a smile. He hugs Gallows and Anderson, who then proceed to just destroy Reigns while the crowd eats it up. Then, just when it seems like Styles is about to be the new champ, Gallows and Anderson turn on him and destroy him too.

Both Styles and Reigns are laid out in the ring, and Gallows/Anderson look to the ramp while the announcers question what they're waiting for. Cue Finn Balor's music. He walks down to the ring, delivers a double stomp to Reigns, then his other finisher to Styles, followed by a double stomp as well. He stands over both guys and holds up the WWE title as the PPV ends.

Easy money.

After Gallows and Anderson destroy them on Raw again, why would they face them at Payback?

I love that idea

But you're forgetting that the casual fan doesn't know who TF Finn Balor is. They'd just be In the ring looking at some dude hold the belt. It would have no meaning. If they indeed are calling Finn up then they need to be doing video packages and vignettes from his past career and maybe even put him on Miz TV before he wrestles a match
