Your off-season priorities???

Its not set in stone that we are getting our point guard via draft pick. We dont even have a draft pick so it has to be assumed we do it through free agency. If you were cluey enough, maybe you would have figured that out.

The point isn't what is set in stone, it's not set in stone that we'll get a shooting guard. It's not an arguement of whether SG is more important to this team than point guard(which seems to be what you want to make an arguement about), when you are making priorities the draft comes before free agency, so therefore if we are going to get into the draft, the draft becomes a bigger priority than getting a Sg in free agency because you have to get into the draft first. draft- june 30. free agency- July. June comes before july.

It's a same situation with Z. Z has a cap hold, so whether you feel a SG is more important than a center is unimportant, Z has to be dealt with first because of his cap hold, we must deal with him before one of our all star SG could sign. Just because you may want a Sg more than a point doesn't mean it's more of a priority as far as the draft goes.

yeah Im sure the Cavaliers brass right now would rather get in the draft with the 19th pick than getting a SG. lol

Where does removing the seats at the Gund rank in priority? What about renaming the Gund? Just because we need a point guard doesn't mean we should trade a young guy for an average PG.

lol^ i agree completely.

I think we all know the order of everything so listing a list of things we need by the order is killing this post.....

The post is labelled "your offseason priorities".

Priorities have order to them. You dont jump ahead. Otherwise my top priority right now is to win the NBA Championships, and forget all this small fry.

When I started this post I meant to find out what each person's idea of players are needed for the Cavs should be going into next season.

That was why I said "on court".

I think we all know what order things will have to be dealt with as far as the draft, dealing with Z, and free agency go.

I was really hoping for people to post thier views as to what position players the Cavs needed to address and what level of importance it is to the Cavs in that individual's mind and why.

On Court issues are determined by off court dealings. I'm sure you can flick past my first two lines to get to the players. People deliberatly want to misinterpret posts to cause arguements. So be it.

Defense, Defense, Defense. That's what separates the men from the boys in the NBA, as the playoffs demonstrate so well. Compare our defenders with those of the remaining four terms to get an idea of how far we have to go to become the elite team we all want. We only have two decent defenders, Snow and Newble, and neither of them is a front-line player. But you can't rebuild Rome overnight, and perhaps the new coach can breathe some defense into the laggards. Whomever we add to the roster, they have to play defense.

That rules out Redd and Allen I guess. Ridding ourselves of mcInnis is a great start to bettering our defense. Specialty coaching will also help. Adding though one or two more role players together with in team improvement hopefully steps us forward.

I Thought I might be the only one who thought defense was important to turning this team in the right direction.

It seems like everyone on this board wants a great scoring guard or Z back, which is fine but that doesnt solve our most important needs especially if all we get is those 2 pieces.

Defense is the biggest key to any team winning a championship and the Cavs really have no one who can both score on offense and plays solid or above average defense.

The closest thing to that we have is Ira Newble and his abilities are really that of a good bench player.

what the hell ?

when i said i wanted larry hughes for his all around game, and mainly his defense, or joe johnson

"i was told, they aren't the pure shooters we need" yet i express it from the defensive aspect.

I like Joe Johnson. I believe of the SG's available he is the only one who brings a presence on both sides of the ball but I'm not sure if he's worth 10+ million and the wait it will take to get him because he is a RFA.

If we get him I would be very happy.

Referring to what I meant--most of the people on this board seem to want a resigned Z and either Ray Allen or Micheal Redd.

That means they have no concern for defense because if that is the 2 players we get we won't be getting anything else and I'm actually a little tired of the excuse that we won't fill all our needs in one off-season.

The truth is we will not have this much money to spend in FA for a long long time with contracts for Gooden,Verejao,James, and Jackson all in the possible future.
That said the Cavs need to fill most if not almost all thier holes right now because they will not be in as good a position to do it later.

A trade I could see happening if the Cavs tried to pursue it would be Z+filler for Brad Miller & a resigned Cutino Mobley.

We fill the void of losing Z with a very capable player in Miller and we get a 2 guard in Mobley who is a good offensive threat and an underrated defensive player.
On top of that we still have cap space to spend on Antonio Daniels, Chris Duhon, or another FA pg.

Another trade possibility I'd like to look into is the Eric Snow for Rafer Alston deal that was talked about before the trade deadline.

A lineup of Alston,Mobley,LBJ,Gooden, and Miller starting is a very nice team with the backups being Duhon or Daniels at PG, Luke Jackson at SG, Sasha at SF, Verejao at PF and Tractor at center.

This is the kind of team I want- good players everywhere some with a very high ceiling as to how good they could be(Gooden, Verejao, Jackson, and Pavlovic).

I don't want a team of say Z, Micheal Redd, LBJ, Drew Gooden and Eric Snow.
That's basicly the same team we had last year with 1 less defensive player in Redd and we still have a PG who everyone would double off of because he is an ineffective offensive player.
If this is your philosphy then what you are basicly saying is that the Cavs are 1 offensive player away from a contender and I'm sorry but in my mind if that is what you think you are sadly mistaken!

The Cavs need to be both smart and creative this offseason because this is the offseason where they have the cap flexibility to turn this team into a contender.
The moves they make during this offseason will be the key to the Cavs keeping or losing LBJ because if they go get the high profile SG, and resign Z for his asking price then that team better be a contender because the Cavs will not be able to move another high caliber player on to this team before LBJ's contract is up.

The Cavs better do it right this offseason or we can kiss our best player and dreams of a championship contender in the future goodbye. :(

Since it seems off topic to discuss front office needs, and I suppose the CBA (which is the real priority, since we can't do anything player contract wise without it) I think our player priorities are:

Do something with Z resign him or sign and trade him to get another real center (Magloire is my preference, and it could be Magloire and a pick, Magloire and Dickau or Magloire and JR smith.)

Assuming we keep Z, then the shooting guard is the position to fill. Nice to get an impact player like JJ or Redd, but I woudl guess it will be less than that. But I still think there are a lot of options for the screen and trey guy.

Assuming we keep Z, get a back up Center that is useful (as opposed to Diop) preferably young and trainable (maybe Larry Brown will bring Darko with him).

I like Magloire.
He's a defensive presence and a post center meaning he doesn't shoot alot of jumpshots.

As for Larry Brown bringing Darko over--I highly doubt it.

First the Cavs have Gooden and Verejao at that position and Larry Brown doesn't hardly play Darko for a reason.

He thinks he is lazy and doesn't work hard enough to deserve to get minutes in the games.

I was just joking about Darko. I doubt LB is his favorite father figure!
