Z profile (and retirement speculation after this season) by Chris Tomasson

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I Love Z as much as you all trust me... especially more than anyone down here in Columbus

before LeBron when I would say Zydrunas Ilgauskas around here people would say Gesundheit...

but I am just not sure he is a legend... Maybe I am wrong, Like I said I love the Big fella

The criteria for retiring Cavs' jersey numbers is not set in stone. It's up to the people in charge at the time. Some people question why Nate Thurmond's number is retired in Cleveland. He played about 100 games with the Cavs. He was part of the Miracle of Richfield. I know that he played HS basketball in Akron and went to BGSU, so he ended his career in Cleveland as a homecoming. But then, his number was retired in 1977.

Think about it. Z has been a part of the franchise for almost 1/3 of it's existence. Heck yeah, his jersey should be swinging in the rafters the day after he retires.

If Zydrunas retires after we win the championship this season, I will be really happy for him; and yeas, his number WILL get retired.

That being said, I'd like to see him stay for 2-3 more seasons as long as he stays healthy. I think him being here would be a HUGE assist to our young bigs, and of course he will always be valuable off the bench. Whatever happens, I don't think I could ever imagine Zydrunas in another team's uniform.

Maybe he'll stay long enough for the Cavs to complete their 4-peat. :)

Z isn't an NBA legend. He's a CAVS legend.

There is a big difference. For instance, why would Austin Carr and Bingo Smith have their jerseys retired even if they are not even in the discussion of the top 50-100 all time? The answer? They were the best CAVALIERS up to the point their jerseys decided to be hung up in the rafters.

  1. He's already in elite category as a Cav. The all-time leader in Rebounds and Blocked Shots. Also a top 5 or so in many other categories, such as Points, Offensive Rebounds, Personal Fouls, Turnovers, Field Goals Made and Attempted, Free Throws Made and Attempted, and especially Games Played, Minutes Played. Just getting to 700 Games Played and 10,000 Points will be their own honors. He's going to pass Ferry this year and also be second on the Points all time, passing the great Cav center Brad Daugherty.
  2. All of these meritorious achievements don't even stand in the light of his community service for all his years in Cleveland. He is a well liked Cav.
  3. And as a well liked Cav, Ferry is the boss of him who's ran by Dan Gilbert. I doubt these guys will hate him at all. In fact, the work and connection he had to them will end up giving him the ultimate consideration.
  4. He was a part of a new era of Cavs basketball. The 2nd in command of the rise to the top, at least up to the past few years. Usually, it's the leaders of a certain generation that will be honored first. LeBron is always going to be the first mentioned, but Z was also a staple of it, regardless of if they win it all or not.
  5. In fact, despite their jerseys retired, all Cavs (with exception to Nate and Mark) were a part of failing seasons, so the years Z spent on the 2002-03 Cavs won't be wasted.
  6. He's an all-star, duh!
  7. He is considered an above average player for the Cavs throughout his tenure. About 85% of the Cavs were not able to average 10+ points a game throughout their career with the Cavs in close to 400+ games. So the fact that he isn't chopped liver in basketball terms does him favors.
  8. He was a big part of the Eastern Conference Champions. Even without the Finals win, that's a big achievement as the arguably 2nd best player (Larry as the competition).
  9. What's just as big was the Division Championship. Nate Thurmond may have been able to be retired for that reason alone (winning the Central all those years ago). So Z can add that to his resume.
This brings back the memories of "Why Z should be retired" from last year...

Seriously, he's had a marvelous career as a Cav, and only 7 others (LeBron, Brad, Austin, Mark, Bingo, Larry, and Nate) have sniffed the career that Big Z has done. It's not like we're retiring one shots like Shawn Kemp, has beens like Larry Hughes, or anyone else. If we win it all, I suppose Mo and Shaq could be considered, but right now... Z is the one who deserves it. And earned it.

As for retirement, I'd love to see him back next year, but who knows? Championship first, players' decisions later.

but I am just not sure he is a legend... Maybe I am wrong, Like I said I love the Big fella

If we win it, he will be. I think though that Lebron and Z are gonna win 2 before it is all over.

Perhaps Ilgauskas will be a strong candidate for the NBA Sixth Man Award. When Walton, a Hall of Fame center whose career was riddled with foot injuries, moved into a reserve role with Boston in 1985-86, he won that award.

And the Celtics won the NBA title.

I almost cried. Really.

And to whoever said that Z would not be in the rafters, you are mistaken. He is up there already.

Win a ring for Ilgauskas

This could be terrible for the cavs next year.... if Z (and possibly even shaq) retires, we will have a huge hole at C, and will still be over the Salary cap (or so marginally under that its no different from having a MLE) With the MLE we will never be able to sign a player of Shaq or Z's caliber, and we will have no other way to get better as a team (at other positions) either.

Damn...thewuck is already in mid-season form with these articles.

I think if you get decent minutes and production out of JJ then you move AV over to the 5 and start JJ at the 4. While that might not be ideal you also have your draft picks, the ability to buy some picks if needed and some money to sign a FA or 2.

Also you have Gibson, West as tradable assets that could net a decent starting quality Big. I also think Parker, and Moon are only on 2 year deals so that would leave us with Moon, Parker, West as expirings with Gibson as a mid level contract type.

NBA.COM also posted a similar article on Z today. Not too much new here, though, after previous Z profiles the last week or two. Nice to see Z get the recognition for his accomplishments and his good attitude coming into the season.

Ilgauskas juggling new roles -- on court and at home

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio -- LeBron James kept the chatter in perspective when he was asked, at the start of the Cleveland Cavaliers' high-expectations training camp, how much advice he sought from fellow NBAers on life with Shaquille O'Neal.

"He's a teammate,'' James said. "I mean, I'm not adopting a kid.''

No, the Cavaliers player doing that would be Zydrunas Ilgauskas.

This offseason, in fact, Ilgauskas and his wife Jennifer adopted a pair of brothers from an orphanage in the 7-foot-3 center's hometown of Kaunas, Lithuania. Upon arrival, Deividas, 5, and Povilas, 4, instantly transformed the Ilgauskas' household into a burgeoning family, something the couple had planned for prior to the miscarriage of twins two years ago. The brothers are way shorter than their dad's newest, biggest teammate and, combined, probably weigh about as much as one Shaq thigh, yet they're requiring some adjustments at home as profound as Ilgauskas is facing these days at work.

"I'm not sleeping as much obviously. I'm a lot more tired,'' the 11-year veteran told reporters after a practice last week. "It's been a blast. It's been challenging at times. But all in all, it's been a great experience. It's an adjustment for everybody -- obviously, a big family now. ... All of a sudden, overnight, you become a father. I'm learning as I go and I try to do the best job I can, and sometimes it's not easy. Everybody can relate to that.''

Not everybody can relate, however, to a future Hall of Famer and massive marquee name showing up at the office, ready to crowd you out of your cubicle. With that challenge -- O'Neal taking over as Cleveland's starting center, Ilgauskas adapting to a backup role -- the affable guy known simply as "Z'' is on his own. The key is, he's still affable and figures to stay that way.

"Z's a team guy,'' Cavs coach Mike Brown said. "He will do whatever we ask him to do. That's his makeup. I don't think he knows any other way. Obviously, when we acquired Shaq, the first call I made was to Z. We talked about his role ... and before I even got started, he was like, 'Coach, whatever I need to do to help us win, that's what I'm going to do.' That goes back to the trust thing; he trusts us as coaches. That's been built over the years.''

Said Ilgauskas: "It's still basketball. Obviously, it's a little bit of an adjustment. I'll have to find what's the right mindset for me, how do I prepare for the games? It's just something I guess I have to learn, because I haven't done it a lot, with starting for so long.''

Specifically, Ilgauskas has started for Cleveland in his past 534 games dating to the 2002-03 season. He's been an All-Star twice in that time and ranks as the franchise's all-time leader in rebounds and blocked shots. He hasn't come off the bench since 2001-02, when coach John Lucas was being especially careful in the wake of Ilgauskas' notorious foot surgeries and subbed him in 39 times in 62 appearances.

Now the Cavaliers crave more inside presence to cope with the likes of Dwight Howard, Kevin Garnett, Tim Duncan and maybe Andrew Bynum. Ilgauskas is best as a pick-and-pop center, and he clearly was lacking foot speed in the postseason last spring. Also, the team sought O'Neal's star power to court James, the resident superstar. All of which means that Ilgauskas will gain the benefits of facing some second-string centers and logging fewer minutes, while coping with the costs of new game-night routines.

"It won't be as much wear and tear on my body,'' he said. "It's going to be a little harder because obviously you're going to come off cold -- you aren't warmed right up from warmups. But a couple minutes up and down the floor, I should be OK. I've thought about it, but I don't really see much of a difference besides getting loose and getting into the flow of the game.''

Brown, asked if Ilgauskas easily accepted the new role because he could thrive against the league's backup centers, said: "More important, what he expressed, it could help the team.''

It is refreshing, let's be honest, to see such a smooth and rancor-free baton handoff in a league where so many players -- out of self-preservation or ego -- resent the arrival of a proven teammate who shares their position. No Big Prima Donna here, at least not from Ilgauskas' side of the aisle.

"Once everything settled down, I knew it obviously made the team better. And it's hard to make yourself better after you win 66 games,'' he said. "At this point in my career, I really want to win. I'm 34 years old and I really want to win a championship. Whatever helps with that, I'm all for it. I've always been high on Shaq -- he's the best center I've ever played against -- so if anyone's going to replace me in the starting lineup, I don't mind that at all.''

Remember, these days, it's all about team for Z. At work and at home. Jennifer is the one who handles Deividas and Povilas while he's practicing or attending to other Cavs obligations. He's the one who navigates the Lithuanian, since the brothers' English is, well, just coming off the bench these days too. But they're making it work -- and making it feel like play.

"I'm in a happy place in my life right now,'' Ilgauskas said. "I'm really satisfied, and kind of content where I am as a player and a person. The kids obviously completed our family -- we had great lives but now it's even better. It's more challenging and a little harder, but you get rewarded in different areas.''

There is, basically, just one area that is non-negotiable for the big guy: banging every day with the even bigger guy. Just so we know the parameters for the renewed daddy and Cavs elder statesman: He will do bedtime stories and board games. He won't do Shaq in practice.

"I won't,'' Ilgauskas said. "Somebody else is going to have to guard him in practice. Otherwise, I won't last till Christmas.''

And Christmas, after all, is going to be big this year. Both in Los Angeles -- Cavaliers vs. Lakers -- and in the Ilgauskas household.

I'll never forget the year we had 4 rookies in the rookie/soph game and Z won MVP. Boy the future looked bright...

Derek Anderson
Z
Ced Henderson
Brevin Knight

I was just a little tot :chuckles:

That brings back some memories. Man, I thought the sky was the limit starting with that year! Just goes to show how special squads like last year's Cavs were and how we shouldn't take anything for granted and enjoy every moment!

...and yes, Z's jersey should be in the rafters as soon as possible (but I hope to see him on the floor as long as he wants to lace them up)!

I think that was the whole plan when they went ahead and locked up Andy into that contract. Frontcourt of Andy and JJ would be more then just good for the future. Im hoping Z decides to stick around for 2 more seasons after this, playing a limited backup role.
Unfortunately it appears that Kahn is still struggling in Russia, so I doubt he will have any impact on future rosters with the cavs. But Ferry still has us set up good for the future, with Andy, JJ, Powe, even if Z decides to retire. If he stays on, then Andy/Z and JJ/Powe looks real good for the years to come. I think Eyenga's gonna make it, so our backcourt of Mo/West/Eyenga will look good to.
