2017 Browns Regular Season

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
The Kizer pick wasn't a bad one....

....for any other team.

But the Browns are not the Green Bay Packers or Denver Broncos, so therefore he's not in the most ideal situation. You can't let him sit on the bench or even when he's put into the line up? You have the worst receiving corp in pro football as his receiving options. Plus a ground game that's very average at best.

The book is not closed on him yet, but man...we really didn't do him any favors.
Let's face it, I don't think anyone thought our ground game would be "average at best". And we knew our receivers were sketchy, but not that we we would be rolling some games with 4th-5th round picks and practice squad/waiver wire pickups from #1 through #5. Yet here we are: the worst-case scenario for evaluating/developing a 2nd round quarterback. So my beef with Sashi here is lack of foresight for this kind of disaster, which in retrospect should have been seen as a very real possibility. We knew Coleman had injury issues. We knew Britt was not the most focused, reliable veteran receiver in the world. And we knew Isaiah Crowell was an undrafted running back, so it shouldn't have been absurd to think maybe his promising 2016 campaign was a mirage.

You don't know you're going to get a starter at #52 and certainly not at #96 or whatever Kessler was picked at. But they're chances that they threw away for low percentage guys. Certainly Kessler was. Kizer, if they're really considering THIS shitshow as the only means of determining whether they're using a 1st on a QB next year, is more so.

There was secondary help on the board at #52, though Obi Melifonwu hasn't played at all due to an early injury, Chidobe Awuzie was getting snaps with Dallas but has been bothered by a hamstring. Teez Tabor has barely gotten into the field. Juju Smith Schuster is another player at a weak position who theoretically could have bolstered the team. None of these guys are world-beaters so far, but if we discard Kizer for a shiny object next year, those names will be fair game if you want to play the "we could have had that guy" game.

The front office put together a team that was not void of talent but very thin on talent around Kizer. Basically the unlucky breaks you get during a season seem to have directly affected Kizer and his development. I think they were counting on Coleman having a break out year. Losing him early took so much off the field, there was nothing behind him to compensate. Britt has had his issues but he played well for a bad team last year, the idea was he could do the same. His focus and effort level are not quite Dwayne Bowe level but he's in the conversation. That's also something the front office couldn't afford.

Crowell last year showed promise of potentially becoming a feature back so they beefed up the offensive line to give him that opportunity. He hasn't ceased that opportunity and Jackson hasn't done him any favors either by abandoning the run early and often.

Basically all that added up has put Kizer in a very difficult position. For a guy who was thought to be raw and needing time to develop, putting him to the wolves with no help around him is showing to be a poor idea. The strategy of having Kizer, Hogan and Kessler as the 3 QBs is also proving to be a bad idea. It would have been a good idea to put a Josh McCown like guy out there to take the lumps while winning a few games here or there. Instead we have to trot Kizer out there because there is just no one else that can do it.

Awesome.

Here’s what I think would be great.

Remember that scene in Rudy where all the guys lined up and dropped their jerseys on Coach Devine’s desk in a symbolic protest of Rudy losing his shot to play after the coaching changeover?

In this case, all of the guys should walk into the medical center demonstrating concussion symptoms, ask to be put into protocol and drop their jerseys on the team doctor’s desk and walk out of the facility together in solidarity.

Literally the entire team will be in concussion protocol as a result of these last two seasons.

Sammy Coates is really really bad

Indeed. Guys we got for free are outplaying him. The trade was for something even less than a 7th rounder, but still. He's not good enough to say, "Hey Sammie, go deep" more than 5-10 snaps a game, apparently.

Here's the thing about being so obviously analytics-heavy. It becomes pretty easy to spot players your organization would like. Sparq isn't some big secret, and while the Browns certainly have other methods of evaluating players, if the fans have figured out that the Browns love SPARQ guys, you can be damn sure the Steelers and every other team in the league know too. So if you're Pittsburgh and you're gonna cut Sammie Coates and his 97.3 pSPARQ percentile, what do you do? Call the Browns and see if you can get them to trade something for him.

Time to re-brand the franchise. The team is named after a legendary coach who was fired by a d-bag owner who eventually moved the team despite tremendous fan support. The team only won one title since then (the year after Brown and was fired).

It's basically been a string of blown opportunities and horrible decisions following the firing of Brown. Remove the stain once and for all.

There was rumors that if the Bengals, Buccaneers or Broncos didn't get a new stadium they were going to move here.

Imagine the weirdness of cheering for the Cleveland Broncos.

The problem isn't so much the name, colors and such. It's been that this teams has been in need of a "Stepian"-like take over by league since oh, 2009 or so. They need some serious help. They are GM during the first obama admin. They need a "Bail out".

I still have no problem with the front office. I think they are doing a great job of acquiring talent and depth. The problem with the Browns this year:

1) Hue Jackson's play calling and game management
2) Lack of talent at offensive skill positions (can't fix everything in one year)
3) Rookie QB
4) Young team overall
5) Some bad luck (Coleman, Garrett, Thomas injuries)

I am not getting into the whole Wentz/Watson thing. We need to give this regime three years. We have never given a regime three years, so lets do that. Browns will have six top 65 picks next year. That can get you a RB, 2 WR, LT, CB, QB (if needed) I think we will be in pretty damn good shape at that point.

Just be patient for one more year. If we are not winning 6-7 games in 2018 then there is a problem. Stay the course Jimmy!

Vikings, Colts, Jets, Bears, Jags, should be automatic wins this year. We should win at least two out of six division games.

Alright, Los. Time to own it. Vikings are 5-2 with the terrible offensive line you were talking about & Case Keenum winning them games while Dalvin Cook is out. You don't still think they were overrated, do you?
