So long, Kay Felder

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Shoutout to Kay who led our team in assists tonight with 3. :(

1. As if everybody didn't already know, this is just a big indicator of what is wrong with our stand still offense.

2. I know he's gonna make mistakes, but at least he makes things happen. Give him some consistent minutes during the regular season so that LeBron/Kyrie can get a couple extra minutes rest per game. If going into the playoffs healthy is the goal, this only makes sense.

What is holding him back is his shot is not consistent yet, he can drive inside and do a quick pull up but his % is not good yet... that would probably come 2 years down the road if he keeps on working on it... but i really like his passing and he is not as bad on defense as I expected for a small guy so far... rooting for his development, but i understand that it is unlikely that he would be reliable this year...

Ok, so I've tallied the data on Kay for the last 9 games he's played (starting with the Charlotte game). I'm using that as the "starting point" because that was kind of his first "sustained breakout period" of the season (he had a good game before that against Memphis in Memphis, when Kyrie sat out), and this occurred after Kay got a confidence boost in his first game in the D-League.

"WBA" = Would-Be Assists. This includes actual assists as well as passes to teammates who missed the subsequent shot.

09 games played
95 minutes played
57 minutes played without LeBron
48 FGA
33 WBA
12 Assists
00 Turnovers
+14 Cumulative plus/minus

Conclusions

Good: Felder is doing a fantastic job at handling the ball without turning it over
Good: Felder is a solid passer and can find his teammates
Bad: Felder isn't shooting particularly well (39/27/76 on the year)
Bad: Felder should be looking to pass a bit more for the moment, until his shooting comes around

The only team in the last 9 games who really exploited Felder's defense was the Bulls. They ran specific plays to isolate Felder and take advantage of his small size. And it worked. The Blazers went at him a bit, but not like the Bulls did.

Felder needs to work on his 3-point shot and he needs to figure out what shots he can successfully get in the NBA, and how to get them.

The 3-point shot can be worked on in the D-League.

The "what shot can he get and how can he get it?" is likely to be more on-the-job training in the NBA for Felder. The D-League athletes are big and good, but not the caliber of athletes Felder will face in the NBA.

Overall, Felder is doing pretty decent for a rookie in my estimation. Especially one for his size playing on a title contender. But if I were coaching him, I'd make sure he's constantly working on his shooting and shot-getting (what shots are viable for him in the NBA) and I'd probably tell him to shoot a little bit less for now (lower the FGA/WBA number). But I know Lue is trying to build his confidence and let the reins out a bit on Felder, so they probably don't want to 'inhibit' him any more than he probably is doing to himself, already, playing in such a pressure-packed situation.

Still, if he shot a bit less, for now, that'd probably be a good thing. Other than that, he seems to be coming along nicely. With the caveat, of course, that his size means he will always be a candidate to be targeted on defense.

All this being said, I wish we had a better and more-experienced point guard (like Jose Calderon) at the moment. Someone who is better than Felder at this point in Felder's career. We need that, and particularly need that with our recent play-making problems (A/TO Ratio).

The tendency I saw from Felder is driving and kicking when his lane is closed off at his best, but often the passes were in less than ideal spots when his teammate received the pass. At his worst, he chucks up a shot against double or triple teams which aren't exactly a turnover, but isn't efficient offense either. He runs some set plays where he delivers a pass to the right guy coming off picks and pindowns, but I don't see as many natural assists which take advantage of the defense's mistakes yet.

There is a difference between getting a teammate in position for a good shot and a pass to bail out Felder. I'm not suggesting all of his "would be assists" that were missed came off of bailout passes, but this was an issue in the summer league that held the team back.

He may develop that vision eventually even with his height issues. Isaiah Thomas is averaging about 6 assist a game this year. I don't see Felder's processing of a defense quite there yet. With Griffin, Lue, and LeBron calling for a third playmaker for the second unit, I don't feel like it's just me seeing this problem.

I think you have a point, Keys. I've seen him with what looked like some solid "natural assists" (or natural would be assists) but I agree his ability to read the defense isn't there yet. He still has a lot to learn.

I will say that the team, in general, has been missing a lot of shots lately. Lue and LeBron have remarked on this. I have seen Felder hit guys wide open on passes, with time to adjust the ball if they want, and they're just bricking shots. It's just something we have to work on now.

I do think Felder has to make the adjustment of trying to score less at this level, particularly while his shooting isn't very good. He's used to being a score/pass option, and he may want to be more a pass option at the moment.

One thing I like that they do with him is they often put him in the corner in the sets so that if he does get a catch-and-shoot three, it's from the shorter corner distance. He definitely needs to work on his 3-point shot.

I would like to get another PG soon. I'm hoping the Lakers fall out of the playoff race completely so they might let go of Calderon.

Can't function well enough off the ball. On defense can't really function on the ball. He packs a scoring punch already but underwhelming in most other areas. His step back and pull up Js from midrange have not been cash money which he will need to have in his arsenal to get guys out of their stance on hesitations so he can hunt higher percentage shots at the rim.

Also Lebron doesn't trust him enough to set hard screens and roll. He's lazy about doing it for Kyrie for heaven's sake. Off ball defense is active though. Gotta like that

Steve Smith should have taught his cousin the art of shooting...

Can we end this experiment and trade this kid for a real man player already?

At least for someone taller than me and I'm only 6-1

Please this team need to get bigger across the board

It hasn't even been a full year.

Seriously, what did people expect out of this kid in year one on a title contender?

So the people who disagreed do you really want Kay to be our project as opposed to a big man?
