The Dog Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I'm more referring to it being unfair to the dog, as huskies and malamutes would be much happier with larger spaces to move around and not being alone all day during the week.

Or anyway this is what I'm told.

I've certainly seen people even in my complex with huskies.

You could always settle for a different breed that does better in apartments. I'd generally agree about huskies. They probably aren't the best breed for apartments, as they are naturally inclined to roam around, whereas most other breeds are comfortable staying on their own turf. Still, I have seen numerous huskies in my complex that appear to be doing fine. Granted, my complex has a dog park as one of the amenities, but even without one getting the dog some daily exercise would likely be sufficient.

I'd love to get a puppy, but I live alone and work 40 hours a week Monday-Friday. How the fuck am I supposed to take care of a puppy in that circumstance? Seems impossible and it sucks.

Not sure if this is financially viable, but you could always hire someone to visit and take your dog out once or twice a day until it is old enough to last a full work shift. The pricing tends to be about fifteen bucks for half an hour of activity where I live. Alternatively, if you work close enough to where you live you can run home for lunch to take the dog out. That's what I did when I got Sandor, my Shepherd. I worked about five to ten minutes away, depending on traffic, and I'd just run home, take him out, eat a quick lunch, and then head back to work. Sometimes I'd even do it again in the afternoon and just work a little later that night to compensate.

been reading a lot while waiting for my flight, Jack. Seems lots of people do have huskies in apartments that do just fine. I'd definitely get it the exercise, as we have a dog park as well and a really nice area for walks or even runs if necessary. Just was more concerned with it being home alone for 8 or even 10 hours a day. Thing is I work a job where many days I could come home at lunch quite easily as I basically work my own hours and choose to run my day however I see fit. Hiring someone is a good idea too, just finding a person id trust with my pup would be difficult.

Seems like I have a bit of a decision to make.

Yea, but I want a larger breed (husky or malamute) that us not going to do well in a smaller space like that. And probably not being left alone 8-10 hrs a day either even if it was a dog fit for a small space.

Thought about a sheltie too but similar issues except they're smaller, yet make a ton of noise so probably piss people off. Although my neighbor has a dog that barks a ton, lol.
Get a Great Pyrenees. My two olders ones are wonderful for house/apartment living. I actually take my female out in the morning and then she comes back in and can hold her tank all day. She hates being outside. My youngest one will find stuff to get into though because he is still very young.

I'd talk to some other dog owners in your complex and see if any of them use dog walkers. Might be a good way to find someone trustworthy.

Phew. So all of them are still alive.

So the other night I moved one of my couches over to block the dogs off from the living room while the girlfriend and I ate some food. Sandor, the Shepherd, found another way in...

Suggestions for dogs that are best suited for apt. living? Me and my girlfriend are planning to get one this Fall. We both have owned before (she had an overly-anxious mix rescue...some sort of boxer mix. Had a great personality when it was with people it knew but couldn't be walked due to getting too excited. I had a long-coat chihuahua as a child...about as low-maitenance as it gets) but this will be the first "joint" dog we own. Hoping to first find a place that has a fenced in yard but regardless, we will be within walking distance of a park.

I've always wanted a bulldog but i am a bit skeptic due to their health issues and how expensive they are. Newly researched breeds we like include Shiba Inu's and Cane Corso's. Obviously i know labs / goldens are always good recommendations. Just curious to hear everyone's thoughts / suggestions regardless.

Pretty much any dog can be fine in an apartment so long as you take them out enough and walk them and what not.

That said, go boxer. They're high energy, but they're also really fucking lazy. Perfect for apartment living. They'll get hyped when you take them out, but they'll sleep a lot when you don't. They're also generally very friendly with both people and other dogs, and they think they are lap dogs.

Flying to cleveland on Monday. I guess ive given up on trying to fly Hannah.
