The Dog Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
can someone make recommendations on "starter" dog breeds? I've had dogs in a family setting, but this will be a first time alone thing.

What kind of living space do you have? And how much time do you have for the dog? Any possible allergies? Asian relatives that visit for extended periods of time? @TyGuy

It'll be a single family home 1100-1300 sqft with a smaller back yard. I work 8 hour days but am off on weekends and am a homebody. No allergies. Also not worried about people eating dog.

So you want a low maintenance dog that doesn't have a reputation for being high energy or especially neurotic if you're going pure bred because they need to be able to handle being in a small place alone.

If you're going to the pound and adopting a dog, you never know EXACTLY what you're getting, but if you have a general idea of the type of dog you're getting...

Bull terriers are under-rated if you can find them. They're the Spuds McKenzie dogs. You also described a pretty ideal situation for a Boston Terrier.

The guys in here have Boxers and they're great all around dogs.

If I was you, I'd go boxer or boston if I was going to the pound. You should be able to find either one. The other ones I mentioned, you'd probably have to go to a breeder. And Havanese and Papillons are good if you're 70 or are looking to pick up dudes.

FWIW I have two dogs, both pound pups.

Jack Russell/Fox Terrier/Rat terrier and maybe Chihuahua or something mix and she's a fucking nightmare. She is a genius and extremely frustrating. Learned every trick I taught her in 10 reps or less but she is just terrified of strangers and any kind of close quarters. She's an escape artist. She has jumped, climbed or dug under every fence she's ever been inside. It's impressive initially, but then it gets exhausting and you really start to get frustrated with the dog and yourself.

She's also 9 and in spite of all efforts, she's refused to be fully house trained. She knows not to go in the house, but does it anyways from time to time. Also exhausting.

We got a second dog four years ago, which is some kind of hound mix. She's amazing. She actually calmed down our first dog significantly and helped her with her territorial issues with dogs and people. She runs up to 10 miles at a time with me. Aside from an EXTREME lack of intelligence, and I mean she is REALLY dumb, she is really a cool dog.

But yeah...she can't figure out how to nudge halfway open gates fully open, step over leashes that are in front of her feet, jump over extremely low gates. The list goes on. Strangely, when I run her in the woods, she will jump rocks in the creek, logs, etc so who the hell knows. But she's got big dumb hound eyes. I can just see in her eyes that she's not processing information.

We just got a new puppy yesterday - a French Bulldog. We named her Paisley (after Prince). My wife wants to train her to be a therapy dog.

We thought our other dog (a bichon/yorkie mix) would be happy to have a new friend to play with. Instead she's sulking and won't have anything to do with the new dog.

I want to get a French Bulldog more than anything. It's just tough because I'm currently living in a small apartment with my parents (it's a really long story, basically they moved to the location I am at for my stepdad's job and hijacked my apartment), but when they move into a house I totally could see getting one. Do you like her so far? I've heard they are incredibly stubborn, smart, and fun dogs.

My friends have a Basset.

Dumbest dog I've ever been around, but just ridiculously funny. His ignorance and lack of wanting to listen just make him the laziest POS ever.

Was the dog friendly with other dogs before this?

yes, we really like her. I just wish our other dog would stop sulking and play with her.

yes, we had a westie when we got her and they always got along. We had to put our westie to sleep last fall and she's acted lonely since then. She did spend time with our daughter's dog over Christmas and they played together quite a bit.

And she's not just sulking with the new dog, she sulking with us too.

Go Boxer. Smart, generally great with both people and other dogs provided you socialize them properly, energetic but not overbearingly so, and low maintenance (only the occasional bath every couple of months). I'm not sure what it's like where you live, but dogs are welcome most places around here so I bring him along to bars and breweries quite frequently and he always does really well. Loves going up to people and soliciting pets.

Just gotta remember that any dog listed as a "boxer mix" is probably actually a pit bull mix. They label them as boxer mixes because they look similar and boxers aren't banned at most apartment complexes like pit bulls are, nor do boxers have the negative stigma.

Not that I have anything against pit bulls. They're a fine breed. But rescues have been pulling that for years.
