Well, at least the Cavs are consistent. They continued their streak of alternating wins and losses over the last six games. They last won two in a row in late February. After getting a get back game against Utah, they’ll try to remedy that against Phoenix tomorrow. But for the time being, a win is a win, and the Cavs will take it. On a night the Knicks and Bucks both lost, any ground gained or lost is felt that much more. The Cavs came out hot. They hit their first seven shots and scored 16 points in the game’s first four minutes. Eight of those points were inside with Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley while Mobley also added a three-pointer. This is now four straight games with a made three-pointer for Mobley. You have to go all the way...
After getting their clocks cleaned in the last 27 minutes at Denver the battered Cavs move on to Salt Lake City to face the tanking Jazz, who have lost 26 of 33 games after starting 22-20. Their best player, former Cavalier Lauri Markkanen, is out and so are Jordan Clarkson and John Collins. The three of them combine to average 55 points and 20 rebounds per game. The Jazz have been eliminated from playoff contention. The Jazz lost in Cleveland 124-116 in December. Markkanen had 26 points and 10 boards while Collins had 16 and 5. The Cavs were without Mitchell, Garland, and Mobley, but put up 124 points anyway. The Jazz rank 27th in scoring defense. Markkanen averages 23 points and 8 rebounds so his loss has an impact. The Jazz are...
Back in third place after a nail biter win over the Sixers, the Cavs head out for their final road trip of the season and this one is a bear. It starts in Denver against the Nuggets, who are 0.5 games out of first place in the three-way brawl with OKC and Minnesota for the top three seeds. The defending NBA champs are 29-8 at home and have won 15 of their last 19 games, so on paper the Cavs have no chance. The Nuggets lost their last two games to the Suns by 7 and the T-Wolves by 13 so they will be highly motivated to get back on track. These teams played in Cleveland way back in November with the Cavs winning 121-109. The Cavs led by 17 after three quarters as the Nuggets were missing starting point guard Jamal Murray. Donovan...
After one of their worst losses of the season, and possibly THE worst, the Cavs return home to take on the Sixers for the fourth and final time this year. The Cavs won in overtime in Philly in November but lost twice in February by scores of 104-97 in Philly (with Mitchell out) and 123-121 in Cleveland (with Mitchell scoring 36). Joel Embiid missed both February games but the Sixers won all the same. Buddy Hield and Kelly Oubre each had 24 points in the win in Cleveland, combining to go 7-for-11 from deep. The Sixers are in 8th place, 1.5 games out of 6th, which they would obviously like to get to in order to avoid the play-in. For the season they are 18-18 on the road and 10-20 since Embiid went down. Both teams have had one day...
Nothing about a losing streak that a game or two against the Charlotte Hornets can’t cure. Tonight the Cavs get a second consecutive game against the 17-54 Hornets, this time in Charlotte where the Hornets are 9-24. On Monday the Cavs beat the Hornets by a comfortable 23 points with a combination of excellent defense (92 points allowed) and awesome ball movement (41 assists on 46 field goals). That formula should work again tonight if the Cavs can replicate it. But they’ll have to do it on the road this time. LaMelo Ball, Mark Williams, Seth Curry, and Cody Martin are out for the Hornets. Ball has only played 22 games this year. Curry played just eight games for the Hornets after being acquired at the deadline before he got hurt...
The NBA schedule makers have drawn the ire of the Cavaliers organization of late, but they must be thanked for tonight. The Cavs welcomed in the NBA’s slump busters: the Charlotte Hornets. If there was ever a time the Cavs needed a home Charlotte game, it was tonight. There’s no need to rehash last night but the Cavs were coming in a rough spot. They were on a three-game losing streak and got their manhood snatched in South Beach. If it was game 21, it may have not been as big as an issue. But it was game 71, and the playoffs inching are closer by the day, and so are the teams chasing the three seed. So, the Cavs needed a get right game. Clear the bad energy and bring in the good. Too bad Ms. Cleo isn’t still around. The ball and player...
