Building the right way?

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Does not mean it is the right move. I have nothing against other posters. However, chasing the 8 seed and wanting to keep Sessions was and is pure insanity. They tried to trade Jamison by the way, but could not work out a deal. Luckily Grant agrees with us. We are in our 1st year of rebuilding and have a bright future, because of our patience. Thank god we didn't foolishly trade and asset to try to add a veteran like some of you wanted.
who advocated that? anyone?

a) Keeping some veterans around is the right move. Leaving the team in a state where they can continue to execute the systems and playing to win doesn't become hopeless is the right move. You don't see it that way, because you seem to think running a team is like running a fantasy team.

b) Obviously you do have something against other posters as you keep insulting them by piling all of us who disagree with your opinions in one pile and flaming

c) I have no clue who you're addressing when you say there are people who wanted to chase the 8 seed or keep Sessions. I've constantly said "wants" have nothing to do with anything. The team is playing to win, and if they are able to do so they will win, but regardless of they're ups and downs they've been on track for the 8th worst record for quite a while now. Their projected finish hasn't wavered with their winning streak nor their losing streak.

d) Grant doesn't "agree with you". Emeka Okafor would have been a Cavalier and he would be getting play time *if* we could have pried away a sweet draft pick in the deal. Parker, Anderson, and Jamison last I checked are still on the team. We didn't get what we wanted, so they didn't get moved. End of story.

Agreed. ajz20, it's time to let this go. The Cavs took the route of adding future assets. Even if some posters were wondering if the Cavs would find more talent and make a playoff push, it hardly matters now. What should matter is what the Cavs do from this point forward.

Doesn't look like Jamison will be released, but does look like Kyrie and Thompson will get more minutes. As Jon has suggested, some of these shifts may mean the Cavs end up playing better (at least until fatigue really comes into play). It will be an interesting week. Hard to replace Sessions, but more Kyrie and less Hollins/Erden could prove a surprise.

In the end what happened at the trade deadline was not shocking (it was pretty similar to what has been predicted for weeks), even if some wanted Jamison gone and others wanted the Cavs to get more help.

Let's move on.

Truehoop article on tanking and how front office decision making factors into building a contender is interesting.

http://espn.go.com/blog/truehoop/post/_/id/39318/tanking-is-the-tip-of-the-iceberg

...In other words, in a sport based on the excitement of live competition, they are trying to lose, which attacks the integrity of the game. And by encouraging this, the NBA has essentially brainwashed fans to root for their own teams to lose. ...

...This tactic is so commonplace that fans believe that teams are supposed to “get bad to get good.” But not only is this a perversion of the sport, it also means that a lot of teams actually “get bad … and stay bad.” ...

...The point is that the teams that are really in need of help in the NBA, are, more than anything, in need of better decision making.

In a fair fight, GM vs. GM, surely Petrie, Thorn and the like wouldn't stand a chance against the likes of the Spurs R.C. Buford and the Thunder's Presti.

In a world where GMs like Buford and the Presti exist, then, what owner in his right mind would employ a GM like Thorn or Petrie, each of whom has such a poor rate of making good transactions?

Because the playing field is balanced against the more intelligent, professionally run teams. Meanwhile, Petrie and Thorn are gifted some of the most valuable assets in sports almost every year, which muddies the waters more than a little. ...

Well, when the Cavs had the best record in the league and little hope of improving via the draft, I certainly was wishing there was some sort of extended lottery that gave every team a fair shot at the top-5 picks and then distributed the rest based on record. IMO, those top picks are too valuable.

I suppose another means would be to draft by auction like some fantasy drafts use - and then top teams would have a huge incentive to watch their cap and rookies would get paid closer to their risk/value.

Lots of schemes: including just doing away with the draft ... but the general point of the article I totally agree with. A sport should never be set up in a manner where fans cheer for losing.

Just a little OT here but I find it kind of funny that most Cavs fans want us to tank and build through the draft but Browns fans on this board want the big name/big splash when we still need to be building through the draft there as well.

Football is much different, your talking about 22 players just offense and defense.. and only 5 in the nba.

still we are still far away from competing with the Brown and Orange similar to the Cavs situation and we have the picks this year to add some serious talent, just a casual observation

I want the Browns to keep building through the draft, but otoh, I'm not wasting my time (or money) following the Browns. They're not worth purchasing NFL league pass, and they're not good enough to get on regional or national TV. So I can understand why the fans who are actually following the team would like to see the team make a splash and get competitive again.

LOL, remember when people wanted to Keep Sessons and add a vet because we could give Miami or the Bulls a good series in May. Where have those posters gone?

It is MUCH easier in the NFL for small/cold-weather markets to retain and acquire quality FAs.

This is due not only to things like the franchise tag, but also because of the offseason falling during the coldest winter months (i.e. they can spend them in Florida/Cali/etc. regardless of where they play) and the lack of a true LA market.

LOL, remember when people wanted to waive Sessions, Antawn, Anderson, and Parker because they were afraid they were too good and we'd win too many games with them?
