I'm eight episodes in to Iron Fist and I think I've figured out the main problem with this show. It just does nothing to stand out from the other Marvel Netflix shows. Daredevil stood out with its fantastic martial arts action scenes (still by far the best from the Marvel shows) and the enjoyable relationship between Foggy and Matt. Jessica Jones stood out by tackling real world issues like rape and consent and the impact they can have on people, and with its female lead who was a total mess of a person. Luke Cage stood out with its primarily black cast, great music, and constant homages to blaxploitation flicks.
Iron Fist just doesn't really do anything to stand out. It's got a generic main character who isn't convincing as a martial arts master. The supporting characters are largely boring. The action scenes are, at best, fine, but do little to wow you. There was opportunity to cheese it up a bit and pay homage to classic martial arts flicks, but the show ignores that in favor of heavy-handed melodrama which falls flat because none of the characters are particularly interesting. It feels like a paint-by-number superhero show.
I did enjoy the ending of episode seven, though. It shook things up a bit.
